DISTINGUISHED CHARACTERISTICS
Correctional Officer I is the entry-level class in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform varied duties related to the operation of jail facilities. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This class is alternately staffed with Correctional Officer II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.
Correctional Officer II is the journey level class of the series, fully competent to perform the full range of assigned duties. This class is distinguished from Deputy Sheriff I/II in that incumbents of this position are public officers as defined in California Penal Code Section 831.5 and are not assigned to patrol duties. Incumbents receive training in a corrections officer academy rather than a basic law enforcement academy.
