Budget and the Tahoe Basin
A budget is a roadmap
and a plan that lays out our County’s direction for the next 12 months. It’s a
forecast of all planned revenue and expenses, based on the amount of
revenue that comes in.
This last Tuesday our Board
of Supervisors formally approved the County’s $569 million operating budget for
fiscal year 2017/18. The budget cemented our Board’s commitment to responsibly
plan for the future, augment its reserve funds, attend to critical road repair
and building maintenance, and maintain services to its residents.
The adopted budget includes:
~ $3.5 million in emergency road repairs; ~ $3 million in local funding for road maintenance; ~ $1 million to improve the County’s information technology infrastructure; ~ $7.1 million to fund future retirement obligations (CalPERS) and other costs; and ~ $250,000 for Community Planning.
In terms of Tahoe Basin-specific issues, the State of California generally funds road maintenance. However, in recent years, we have lost over $4 million in funding. As a result, the county has had to supplement money from our General Fund in order to pay for emergency repair work.
The budget funds
the following emergency road maintenance projects needed as a result of last
winter’s damage:
~ Tahoe Road Repairs (Federal Funding) - Fall 2017 - $1,373,540 estimated total project cost for various locations
in Meyers;
~ Tahoe Road Repairs (local funding) - Fall 2017 - $2,220,289 estimated total project cost for various locations in Meyers;
~ Elks Club Drive - Spring/Summer 2018 - $927,750 estimated total project cost;
~ Fallen Leaf /Tahoe Mountain Roads - Fall 2017 $821,275 estimated total project cost;
~ Evelyn Road Culvert and Road Repair - Fall 2017 - $365,000 estimated total
project cost;
~ Lake Tahoe Boulevard/South Upper Truckee Repairs
- Fall 2017 - $508,607 estimated total project cost; and
~ Lakeview Avenue - Spring/Summer 2018 - $684,000 estimated total project cost.
