Board of Education Announces Kyla Johnson-Trammell as Finalist for OUSD Superintendent

OAKLAND, CA -- At tonight’s Board of Education meeting, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Directors announced that Kyla Johnson-Trammell is the finalist for the permanent Superintendent position. Currently serving as Interim Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Johnson-Trammell would assume the position starting July 1, 2017 subject to arriving at a contractual agreement with OUSD.

Kyla Johnson Trammell

Born and raised in East Oakland and a third generation Oaklander, Johnson-Trammell is a fierce advocate for Oakland public schools, having attended Montclair Elementary and Montera Middle School. She holds a communications degree from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her EdD from U.C. Berkeley in Educational Leadership.

“I am honored by this opportunity to guide such an important organization in my hometown. To lead the teachers and staff of OUSD has been a dream of mine since I first stepped into a classroom as a professional,” said Johnson-Trammell. “I am excited by the progress our District has made and look forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead.”

Ms. Johnson-Trammell’s commitment to Oakland and urban education is evidenced by more than eighteen years of service to OUSD in several capacities including elementary school teacher, middle school assistant principal, elementary school principal, Director of Talent Development, Associate Superintendent for Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction and Elementary, Network Superintendent and Interim Deputy Superintendent.

“Dr. Johnson-Trammell has all the qualifications our students, community members and staff prioritized as most important in the next Superintendent,” said Board of Education President James Harris. “The search process was a highly collaborative effort and we appreciate the participation of extremely talented candidates and everyone that was involved in the search process. We are confident that Dr. Johnson-Trammell has the background and dedication to effectively lead our District into a new chapter.”

Ms. Johnson-Trammell will take over for Interim Superintendent, Dr. Devin Dillon. “I deeply appreciate the partnership Dr. Dillon and I have built over the years and the expertise she has shared with me will be invaluable as I take on this new role. I look forward to our continued collaboration.”

On Dr. Dillon, President Harris said, “The Board and I want to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Dillon for her extraordinary leadership during this time of transition. Dr. Dillon stepped into the role of Interim Superintendent as we faced major challenges as a district. We are truly grateful for her expertise and dedication.”

The months-long process to identify OUSD’s next superintendent began in December 2016.
