Tropical Storm Watch In Effect for Los Angeles County
The National Weather Service has issued a Local Advisory and Tropical Storm Watch in response to Hurricane Hilary. Weather officials project heavy rainfall and high winds from Sunday, August 20 through Monday, August 21, 2023. Coordination efforts among City departments and other local response agencies to prepare for excessive rain, strong wind, and potential flooding are ongoing as this dynamic storm evolves.
Secure your property. If your home or business is prone to flooding, prepare for excessive rainfall runoff. Sandbags are available at Station 1 (9600 Culver Blvd. at Irving Place gate). Clear gutters and trim trees. Prepare for high winds by securing loose objects (e.g., patio furniture, gas grills, trash containers)
Prepare for power outages by having cell phones and other devices charged. Have battery-operated flashlights, radios and back-up batteries available. Candles are not recommended as a light source.
Turn off lawn sprinklers and lower the level of water in swimming pools to prevent overflowing and flooding.
During the Storm
Monitor local news for official warnings and evacuation orders. Check social media and alerts.
Avoid non-essential travel during the storm. If you must travel, use caution, and never drive, walk or swim through a flooded road or area.
If the power goes out, turn off all appliances and keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to prevent food spoilage.
