A Triumphant Return for
Don Merkt's
Crossed Currents Sculpture
4343 Duquesne Avenue
Entrance to Culver City's Transportation Facility
We promised it would be returned in August - and we kept our promise!
Please come and admire (with physical distance and a mask of course) this newly-restored largest sculpture in Culver City's public art collection.
Crossed Currents by Portland artist and architect Don Merkt, was installed in 1999 as an homage to Ballona Creek, which it overhangs, and the Tongva peoples living nearby. The City searched far and wide for a company with the diverse skills to complete this restoration project. Kudos to the Carlsbad company, Restoration ArTechs, for meeting all unforeseen challenges.
Significant improvements include the addition of LED lamps, the securing of the floating steel "bubbles", the removal of corrosion and refinishing with marine paint, plus a final coating with hydro-phobic nanotechnology. Good to go for another 20 years!
