Culver City to Review Police Use of Force Policies

At its meeting on June 15, the City Council approved the Mayor signing on behalf of the City the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Mayor’s Pledge on Police Use of Force.

Signing the Mayor’s Pledge means that the City will take the following four actions:

(1) Review Culver City’s police use of force policies.

(2) Engage the community by including a diverse range of input, experiences, and stories in the review.

(3) Report the findings of the review to the community and seek feedback.

(4) Reform Culver City’s police use of force policies

“I look forward to engaging with our community and the Police Department on this important review of how we approach and deliver our public safety services,” said Culver City Mayor Göran Eriksson.

City Council Creates Public Safety Task Force

At its meeting on Monday, June 22, the City Council approved a recommendation from the City Council’s Ad Hoc Police Liaison Subcommittee to establish a Task Force to review public safety services. 

City Council Reallocates Funding to Social Services

Additionally at its meeting on June 22, the City Council reallocated $153,000 in budget savings from the Police Department’s budget to Social Services. The funding will be used for Social Workers to deploy on certain Police and Fire emergency calls.

Next Steps and More Information

At the City Council meeting on July 13, 2020 at 7:00 P.M., City staff will present a proposed process to review public safety services for City Council's consideration.
