Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

Cerritos Library's 30-45 minute storytimes incorporate stories, audience participation and a book-related DVD, and will be held in the Little Theater.

HOMEWORK TIME
Do your children need help with their homework? Cerritos Library offers Homework Time, an after-school homework help program for Cerritos resident students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Library is offering two sessions Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. in the Art Studio of the Children's Library. Space is limited. Session fee is $25. Students should bring their homework and a book to read or their library card to check out reading material to each class meeting. A parent or a designated individual is required to sign students in and out of class.

MICROSOFT WORD INTERMEDIATE
In this three-hour class, instructor Jason Galeener will teach participants how to use Microsoft Word 2007 at an intermediate level. The class is limited to 27 participants who should be familiar with the basic functions of Microsoft Word 2007.

CARTOONING WITH DAVE BOATMAN -
THE ART OF MO WILLEMS

This class will focus on the art of Mo Willems, who wrote and illustrated many children's books such as "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus." In this educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction, instructor Dave Boatman will teach students how cartoons are used in our society; present warm-up and imagination exercises; provide drawing tips and demonstrate how to draw various cartoon facial expressions. This class will inspire and motivate students in their love of cartoons and drawing. Space is limited to 50 participants.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR KIDS
At this creative writing workshop children will learn about various aspects of story writing. Space is limited to 27 participants.

ART INNOVATORS/PRESIDENTS' DAY METAL-TOOLING
In remembrance of our great presidents, we will learn how to impress their famous profiles onto a piece of metal, as they have impressed us with their superb leadership. The workshop is limited to 20 participants. The fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given.

BUBBLE SCIENCE
In this Art in Science workshop, students will explore the science of creating bubbles. Discussions will include how bubbles are made and what makes them float. Each student will have the opportunity to create their own bubble prints, each as unique as a fingerprint. This workshop is limited to 20 participants.

BEGINNING ORIGAMI FOR KIDS
Volunteen Alexa Marie Flores will be teaching basic origami folding for children. Children will learn how to fold a heart and a cat face in this one-hour class.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS
Children can learn the finer points of art in this series of workshops presented by Young Rembrandts. Students will use Sharpie pens and markers to create a face in the style of Spanish painter and sculptor Picasso. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5. No refunds will be given.

VIDEO GAME DESIGN
Students ages 9-14 can learn how to design a unique and interactive 2-dimensional video game with the help of instructors from Freshi Media. Participants will work in pairs to conceive, design and build an original computer game which will include the characters, action, background, music and format. The fee for the six-week session is $150 for Cerritos residents and $175 for non-residents. No refunds will be given.

SAT PREP/CRITICAL READING
With the help of staff from Northstar Learning Center, learn tips and strategies to score well on the critical reading section of the SAT. Discover how to effectively manage time for long passages, sentence completion, and short passages.

SAT/ACT COMBO PRACTICE TEST
In collaboration with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, a free full-length SAT/ACT combo practice test will be held for students in grades 9-11. Space is limited to 50 students. Test takers are encouraged to eat a hearty breakfast and arrive by 8:45 a.m. to sign in. Please bring a calculator, two No. 2 pencils, and snacks to eat during very short breaks.

MEET AUTHOR NICOLINE AMBE
Dr. Nicoline Ambe, a speaker, educator, author and coach, will discuss her book "A Teacher's Notes: Helping Parents Prepare Their Children at Home for Success in School" on Monday, February 10. Dr. Ambe will show parents simple but effective strategies that can immediately be implemented at home to help children excel in school, develop their talents and prepare for a successful future in college and beyond. FAMILY NIGHT/JUGGLER DAVID COUSIN

FRIDAY EVENING MOVIE
On Friday, February 14, the film "Despicable Me 2" (2013) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Universal Pictures presents this sequel to the wildly successful 2010 animated picture featuring Gru (voice of Steve Carell), the ex-scheming evildoer-turned-parental figure who now aims to produce a delicious new line of jams with the help of his tiny minions and his old pal Dr. Nefario (voice of Russell Brand). MEET PHOTOJOURNALIST ROBERT LANDAU
Photographer/author Robert Landau will discuss his book "Rock 'n' Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip" and sign copies. In this coffee-table book filled with hundreds of vividly colorful photographs, Landau celebrates one of the most creative chapters in outdoor advertising history. A must for every rock lover and pop-art aficionado, this is a bound museum of outdoor advertising's best artwork, showing the happenings on Sunset Strip circa 1967.

AN EVENING OF POETRY
In celebration of Black History Month, enjoy an evening of poetry presented by poets from the Still Waters Workshop in Inglewood. CONTESTS FOR TALENTED TEENS
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the 16th Annual Teen Contests to encourage teens to explore their talents. The contests in art, photography, poetry and short story are open to all students with valid Cerritos Library cards and attending grades 7 through 12. All entries must be original. Only one entry per person is allowed for each of the categories. Gift certificates to a local bookstore will be presented to the winners at a reception in May. The themes for the contests are:
Art: "Art/Architecture of Cerritos" (No larger than 12"x 18"and using any medium) Three-dimensional art will be accepted.

Library Displays

MOSAICS BY SUE HELMS
Many colorful mosaic pieces by Sue Helms will be exhibited in the Library's lobby area until the end of March. Helms uses glass, mirror, beads, faceted crystal, broken jewelry, foil and other materials to create her one-of-a-kind artwork.


DRIVE-IN MOVIE THEATERS
Several black & white photographs of drive-in theaters located in Southern California will be on display in the Local History Museum through the end of March. Photographer Victor Villegas wants to keep alive the memories of movie nights at these local drive-in theaters.


ARTISTS' BOOKS
Unique pieces from the Library's special collection of artists' books will be displayed throughout the Library until the end of March.
