Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

BEGINNING ORIGAMI FOR KIDS
Volunteen Alexa Marie Flores will teach basic origami paper folding techniques and show children how to make a paper crane at this hour-long workshop limited to 24 participants.

MAGIC WORKSHOP FOR KIDS
At this hour-long workshop, magician Wayne Kawamoto will teach children simple magic tricks that employ common household items. The workshop is limited to 50 participants and the fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR KIDS
At this creative writing workshop, children will learn about various aspects of writing, including character, plot and setting. This event is limited to 27 registrants.

RESOURCES FOR THE COLLEGE BOUND
On Monday, October 22, teens will learn about test preparation resources and other useful tools for researching colleges and universities. This event is limited to 27 participants.

PUPPET WORKSHOP FOR KIDS
At this workshop back by popular demand, participants will create their own puppets and perform in a game show called "Guess That Feeling," hosted by Gil, the "Woody Wordman." This class is limited to 30 participants. The fee per child is $5 and no refunds will be given.

BOOKMAKING FOR ADULTS
In conjunction with the special display of artists' books throughout the Library, book art instructor Rachelle W. Chuang will present a free workshop on how to create a Jacob's ladder book on October 25. Space is limited to 20 participants.

DRAWING FOR KIDS
Participants will learn basic art or drawing techniques in this hour-long hands-on class, which is limited to 24 participants.

MICROSOFT EXCEL TIPS & TRICKS
In this free three-hour Microsoft Excel class, instructor Jason Galeener will provide tips and tricks for formatting spreadsheets, sorting and filtering lists, creating professional-looking graphs and printing. The class is limited to 27 students with basic Excel experience.

FAMILY NIGHT: THE MAD SCIENTIST
Through a mixture of science and magic, children will see a paper spider turn into a "real" spider; hear the tales of Count Eggbert and Countess Eggberta as they battle the wicked witch; and watch the wicked witch melt right before their eyes! The audience will also find out how the seemingly sane Mr. Bernoulli helped the Mad Scientist float an eyeball in the air. In the grand finale, the Mad Scientist will introduce the audience to the eerie world of dry ice, making bubbling potions and lots of fearsome fog. This 45-minute presentation of gruesome goodness and fun will have the audience gasping and laughing at the Mad Scientist's peculiar and chilling science experiments. JOURNEY THROUGH LATIN AMERICA:
A CLASSICAL GUITAR CONCERT

This solo guitar program by Michael Nigro will take you on a musical voyage through Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia. Acclaimed for his expressive playing and well-developed technique, Nigro will provide a memorable concert experience brimming with musicality and engaging commentary.

FRIDAY EVENING MOVIE
On Friday, October 12, the film "The Avengers" (2011) will be screened in the Skyline Room. When an unexpected enemy threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency S.H.I.E.L.D., assembles a team that includes superheroes Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and The Hulk. "THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK" OPERA
An interactive pre-opera workshop and "The Diary of Anne Frank" opera will be presented by Long Beach Opera on Monday, October 15 as part of its Opera@School Performing Arts Program. This event will help spark an interest in opera and engage the audience to explore issues of tolerance, racism, ethics, social responsibility and personal strength. FRIENDS FALL BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will hold its fall book sale in October in the Skyline Room. Membership to the Friends' group will be available at the door on Friday evening. The cost of memberships follows: individual $10; family $15; organization and corporation $25; and life membership $100. CHILDREN'S ART & WRITING CONTESTS
Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the Tenth Annual art contest for children in grades K through 6 and a short story contest for children in grades 3 through 6. The art contest theme is "Seasons" and the short story contest theme is "An Unforgettable Adventure." The deadline to turn in entries is Friday, October 19 before 9 p.m. Only one art and one short story entry is allowed per child. For the art contest, use your imagination to create a seasonal scene with paints, crayons or any other medium. Artwork must be no larger than 12" x 18" and unmounted. Short stories about an unforgettable adventure must be original, no more than 500 words, and preferably typed on white letter size paper. Fliers and applications are available at the Children's Help Desk and on the Library's website. Winners will receive bookstore gift certificates at a reception in December. SHAKESPEARE'S "A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM"
Talented actors from the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival's Shakespeare on Tour will present Shakespeare's quintessential comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on October 24. Please arrive early for this free live performance. For more information, call (562) 916-1342.

VIOLIN CONCERT BY LI MAO
World renowned violinist Li Mao will present a concert in the Skyline Room on Sunday, October 28. He will be accompanied on the piano by Clara Cheng. Mao will play pieces by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Wieniawski and more.

Library Displays

BRUSH PAINTINGS BY JAMES KIM
Several brush paintings and banners by James Kim will be displayed in the Library's lobby through October. Kim has participated in several international calligraphy and art exhibitions.

ART OF THE BOOK: ACCORDION FOLD BOOKS
A selection of artists' books made with an accordion fold will be on display throughout the Library until the end of September. An accordion fold is one of the most widely used methods in making artists' books. The Library's collection of accordion fold books includes several variations with a playful and versatile quality both in size and format. This will be one of the ongoing displays planned to showcase unique pieces from the Library's special collection of artists' books.

ELVIS MEMORABILIA
A wide variety of Elvis memorabilia will be on display in the Local History Museum through the end of October. These unusual items are from the collection of Deyanira Torres.

EVOLUTION OF LEGOS
Legos were invented in 1947 and have evolved from small wooden playthings to colorful plastic building bricks. Library employee Dawnine Medina's collection of Legos portrays the evolution of these popular toys and is on display in the Young Adult area of the Library until the end of October.

ARTS & HUMANITIES MONTH DISPLAY
In celebration of the National Arts & Humanities Month, several art pieces by students from local schools will be displayed near the Craftsman area of the Library until the end of October.
