Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

RESEARCH TOOLS FOR TEENS
In this workshop, teens will learn about print and electronic resources that are helpful when completing research projects and papers. The event is limited to 27 participants.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP FOR KIDS
At this creative writing workshop, children will learn about various aspects of writing, including character, plot and setting. The workshop is limited to 27 participants.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS
Children can learn the finer points of art at this workshop presented by Young Rembrandts. Students will use colored pencils to create a picture in the style of famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5 and no refunds will be given. The November 13 class will focus on Gustave Caillebotte and the December 4 class will focus on Leonardo da Vinci and the "Mona Lisa."

DAVE BOATMAN'S CARTOON CLASS
This class will provide an educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction. Dave Boatman will teach participants how cartoons are used in our society; present warm-up and imagination exercises; and provide drawing tips, including instruction on the various cartoon facial expressions. This class is meant to inspire and motivate students in their love of cartoons and drawing. The class is limited to 50 participants.

DRAWING FOR KIDS
Participants will learn basic art or drawing techniques in this hour-long hands-on class, which is limited to 24 participants.

INTERMEDIATE DSLR CAMERA CLASS
In this free workshop, instructor Randall Chambers will explore the artistic side of photography using manual digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. The hands-on class will cover lighting, composition and other photography concepts. Bring your DSLR camera, owner's manual and extra batteries. The class is limited to 20 participants.

SAT PRACTICE TEST
In collaboration with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, a free full-length SAT practice test will be held for students in grades 9 through 11 on Saturday, September 15. Space is limited to 50 students. Test takers are encouraged to eat a hearty breakfast and arrive by 8:45 a.m. to sign in. Please bring a calculator, two No. 2 pencils, and snacks to eat during the very short breaks.

Score Giveback & Test Taking Strategies

MAGIC WORKSHOP FOR KIDS
At this hour-long workshop, children will learn simple magic tricks that employ common household items. The workshop is limited to 50 participants and the fee is $5 per child. No refunds will be given.

FRUIT CARVING WORKSHOP
Fruit decoration specialist Myung Soon Park will present a hands-on fruit carving workshop on Wednesday, September 19. The workshop is limited to 20 participants and the fee is $10 per person. No refunds will be given.

HOMEWORK TIME
Do your children need help with their homework? Cerritos Library offers Homework Time, an after-school homework help program for Cerritos resident students in grades 3 through 6 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Space is limited to 12 participants and the course fee is $25. Students should bring their homework and a book to each class. A parent or a designated individual is required to sign students in and out of each class meeting.

FRIDAY MOVIE EVENING
On Friday, September 7, the film "The Pirates – Band of Misfits" (2011) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Pirate Captain is a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz to earn the coveted Pirate of the Year Award. It's a quest that takes the heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. "The Pirates – Band of Misfits" is rated PG and has a running time of 88 minutes. BOOK CLUB FOR ADULTS
The Book Club for Adults will meet for coffee and an open discussion of book choices for 2013. LOVE IS IN THE AIR: A ROMANCE TEA
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will host an afternoon tea with five local romance writers in the Skyline Room on Saturday, September 29. Participating authors include Tanya Hanson, Jennifer Haymore, Linda O. Johnston, Charlene Sands and Patricia Thayer. Copies of the authors' books will be available for purchase. CHILDREN'S ART & WRITING CONTESTS
Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the Tenth Annual art contest for children in grades K through 6 and a short story contest for children in grades 3 through 6. The art contest theme is "Seasons" and the short story contest theme is "An Unforgettable Adventure." The deadline to turn in entries is Friday, October 19 before 9 p.m. Only one art and one short story entry is allowed per child.

For the art contest, use your imagination to create a seasonal scene with paints, crayons or any other medium. Artwork must be no larger than 12" x 18" and unmounted.

Short stories about an unforgettable adventure must be original, no more than 500 words, and preferably typed on white letter size paper.

Fliers and applications are available at the Children's Help Desk and on the Library's website. Winners will receive bookstore gift certificates at a reception in December. For more information, contact Librarian Padmini Prabhakar at (562) 916-1389.


Library Displays

ECOLOGY IN TAIWAN
A display of 30 color photos exploring the ecology and the natural assets of the Republic of China (Taiwan) can be enjoyed near the Craftsman area of the library through the end of September. These pictures illustrate the nation's focus on ecology and technology in all aspects of life. The exhibition was made possible by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles.

BRUSH PAINTINGS BY JAMES KIM
Several brush paintings and banners by James Kim will be displayed in the Library's lobby through October. Kim has participated in several international calligraphy and art exhibitions.

ART OF THE BOOK: ACCORDION FOLD BOOKS
A selection of artists' books made with an accordion fold will be on display throughout the Library until the end of September. An accordion fold is one of the most widely used methods in making artists' books. The Library's collection of accordion fold books includes several variations with a playful and versatile quality both in size and format. This will be one of the ongoing displays planned to showcase unique pieces from the Library's special collection of artists' books.

ELVIS MEMORABILIA
A wide variety of Elvis memorabilia will be on display in the Local History Museum through the end of October. These unusual items are from the collection of Deyanira Torres.

EVOLUTION OF LEGOS
Legos were invented in 1947 and have evolved from small wooden playthings to colorful plastic building bricks. Library employee Dawnine Medina's collection of Legos portrays the evolution of these popular toys and is on display in the Young Adult area of the Library until the end of October.
