DAVE BOATMAN’S CARTOON CLASS
This class will provide an educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction. Dave Boatman will teach participants how cartoons are used in our society; present warm-up and imagination exercises; and provide drawing tips, including instruction on the various cartoon facial expressions. This class is meant to inspire and motivate students in their love of cartoons and drawing. The class is limited to 50 participants.

BALLOON WORKSHOP FOR KIDS

In this free workshop, instructor Randall Chambers will introduce participants to digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and their special features. In this free workshop, instructor Jason Galeener will cover topics such as connecting to Wi-Fi or 3G networks, using built-in applications, downloading apps, browsing the web and taking pictures with the iPad. Participants will also learn how to use the iPad as an ereader to download eBooks from the Cerritos Library. Bring your iPad and current Cerritos Library card to the workshop. MANGA WORKSHOP
Learn more about the popular graphic novel art form Manga at this workshop taught by Michael Garisek. Garisek has been a cartoonist /caricaturist for more than 40 years and learned about the Manga industry when he was on a painting assignment in Japan. The workshop is limited to 50 participants.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS
Children can learn the finer points of art at this workshop presented by Young Rembrandts. Students will use colored pencils to create a picture in the style of famous Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5 and no refunds will be given.

INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO
Hands-on fun with instruments will be presented on August 1. Volunteers from the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra will give a short presentation explaining the different string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. BLOOD DRIVE
The City of Cerritos and the American Red Cross will hold a City Challenge blood drive on Tuesday, August 7 in the parking lot of the Cerritos Library. All blood drive participants will receive two complimentary VIP tickets to the Laugh Factory and a voucher for two Chivas tickets. (There is a $10 total processing fee for the Chivas tickets.) Participants may also enter a monthly drawing for a $100 gift certificate to the movie theater of their choice and a daily drawing for four movie tickets. MEET AUTHOR CRAIG B. SMITH
Craig B. Smith will discuss his book “Counting the Days: POWs, Internees and Stragglers of World War II in the Pacific” on Thursday, August 9. This book relates the experiences, both good and bad, of six prisoners of war (POW) on both sides of the Pacific War from their confinement to their release. Smith dedicates this book to the United States Marines who fought the Japanese on Guam, and to those who became POWs under terrible circumstances. JOURNEY TO THE WEST
Based on a story written by Wu Cheng’en in the 16th century, the 27-minute film “Journey to the West” recounts the poignant and humorous adventures of the impetuous and willful Monkey King, who is chosen by Buddha to guarantee the safety of a Chinese monk on his mission to bring Buddhist scriptures to China. Together with a cast of colorful characters, they must walk the dangerous road west from China to India, with many adventures and lessons along the way. This film features renowned historians, brought together by Professor David Damrosch of Harvard University, who delve into the colorful details of the film’s story and time period. The film is one episode in the series “Invitation to World Literature,” a production of WGBH Educational Foundation with Seftel Productions for Annenberg Media. WATERCOLORS BY KATHY EPPICK
Several outstanding watercolor paintings by local teacher Kathy Eppick will be on display in the lobby of the Library through the end of August. Eppick admires Georgia O’Keefe and tries to incorporate art in her classroom curriculum.
DISNEY COLLECTIBLES
A variety of Disney collectibles including Toon Town ceramic houses, snow globes and Lladro figurines will be on display in the Local History Museum through the end of August. These items are from the collection of Mary Ann Camacho.
