Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at www.cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

PUPPET & PLAYERS LITTLE THEATRE
Master puppeteers will bring puppetry to life in this hands-on workshop. Students will have an opportunity to build hand puppets, learn basic puppet manipulation skills and participate in an interactive scene where they use their puppets to depict emotions. DRAWING FOR KIDS

BEGINNING CHESS FOR KIDS
Children ages 6-13 are invited to learn how to play chess. This hour-long class is for beginners only. Participants will be given a brief introduction to the game of chess, including learning how pieces move and how the game can be won. Seating is limited to 10 participants. CREATIVE WRITING FOR KIDS

BOOKMAKING WORKSHOP
In conjunction with the special display of artists’ books throughout the Library, book art instructor Rachelle W. Chuang will present a free workshop on making a beautiful piano hinge book on Thursday, March 24. Learn the techniques for making this unique book and take home the finished product. STAR TEST PREP COURSE
This course will help students in grades 4 through 6 acquire the skills needed for the STAR test. Students will gain confidence by taking practice tests and reviewing their work with instructors. Applicable homework will be assigned. Several test-taking strategies will be discussed, including efficient use of time, understanding and following detailed written directions, placing answers correctly on the answer sheet, checking answers, problem solving tactics, and practice with questions that contain the terms “none of the above,” “all of the above,” “not here,” negative wording, and true/false statements. The three-week session costs $50 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Space is limited to 20 students. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

CHILD AND TEEN READ ALOUD
Children who can read are invited to participate in special read aloud sessions with teens. To be eligible for the program, all participants must attend the first day of class for testing. Space is limited to 15 participants for the Thursday session and 10 participants for the Friday session. Please register for only one of the following two programs. Class will not be held during the week of Spring Break (April 18-22).

S.A.T. ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP
In collaboration with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, a free S.A.T. essay writing workshop will be held for students in grades 9-11 on Saturday, April 9. Space is limited to 50 students. In this workshop, students will write a practice essay under timed, test-like conditions. Students will get advice on what essay graders are looking for as well as strategies on writing effective essays. Graded essays can be picked up later. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

MEET CHILDREN’S AUTHOR OLIVER CHIN
On Monday, March 7, author and artist Oliver Chin will discuss his children’s book “Year of the Rabbit” which is part of the popular annual series “Tales from the Chinese Zodiac.” Chin was called “an expert on Pacific Rim pop culture” by the “San Jose Mercury News” and has written several books for children. FRIDAY AT THE MOVIES
On Friday, March 11, the film “Secretariat” (2010) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Based on a true story, this film chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over Meadow Stables from her ailing father, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery navigates the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. The film is rated PG and has a running time of 116 minutes. MEET PROMINENT AFRICAN AMERICAN AUTHORS
The Links, Incorporated Orange County Chapter is partnering with the National Black MBA Association Los Angeles Chapter and the Cerritos Library to offer a special opportunity to meet several prominent African American authors, including Daniel Armstrong, Flora Brown, Shirley and Bernard Kinsey, Attica Locke, Gary Phillips, Paul Woodring and more. SPRING BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will hold its spring book sale in the Skyline Room of the Cerritos Library on Saturday, April 2. “FILL A BAG FOR $2” will be held on Sunday, April 3 and the Members Only Presale will be held on Friday, April 1. Membership to the Friends’ group will be available at the door on Friday evening. The cost of memberships for individuals is $10, family $15, organization and corporations $25, and life membership is $100. Library Displays

ART OF THE BOOK: CALIFORNIA ARTISTS
A selection of artists’ books made by California artists will be on display throughout the Library until the end of March. This display is part of the ongoing showcase of the unique pieces from the Library’s special collection of artists’ books.

BOOKS SIGNED BY VISITING AUTHORS
Cerritos Library has had the privilege of hosting several best-selling authors throughout the years. In celebration of National Library Week, a display of books signed by visiting authors will be on display in the Local History Museum, the Young Adult area and the Library’s lobby until the end of April. The display includes books signed by Ray Bradbury, Meg Cabot, Stephen Cannell, Earlene Fowler, Cornelia Funke, Sue Grafton, Denise Hamilton, Faye Kellerman, John Lescroart, and more.

AMERICAN RED CROSS DISPLAY 
The Greater Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross is celebrating American Red Cross month in March with a Community Outreach Tour. Vintage uniforms and other Red Cross memorabilia will be on display in the Library’s lobby through the end of March. An Emergency Response Vehicle containing historical items, photographic displays of local community disasters and disaster preparedness literature will be available for viewing in the Library’s parking lot on Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
