Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

PRINCESS & THE PIRATES: A PUPPET SHOW
Join us for a summer puppet show presented by Franklin Haynes Marrionettes. In the show, Pirate Captain Cannonball kidnaps Princess Rachel and locks her up on Skull Island. To free the princess, her brother John and his trusty pirate dog and friends have to get Captain Cannonball to laugh! Children will enjoy watching pirates that juggle, blow bubbles, walk on stilts and more. In the end, Pirate Captain Cannonball finally laughs and Princess Rachel is set free. Doors will open at 3:15 p.m. Please arrive early as seating is limited to 220.

HIGH SEAS PIRATE ADVENTURE
Come one and all, me hearties aboard the good ship “Bold Adventure.” Venture forth with Christopher Yates on a mighty high seas expedition in pursuit of the famed and fearless female pirate AraBella Drummond! Learn about navigation, knots, barnacles and booty. Visit exotic ports from the Caribbean to Canton, meet strange creatures and encounter unscrupulous characters. Doors will open at 3:15 p.m. Please arrive early as seating is limited to 220.

FINGER KNITTING
Participants will learn how to “finger knit” (knit without needles) simple chains using one or two strands of colored yarn. The finished products can be connected to form scarves and other items. The class is limited to 25 participants. The fee per child is $5. No refunds will be given. Parents may attend the August 3 class with their child.

ASTRONOMY EVENTS
The following two events are being offered in support of the “Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery” exhibit presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association, Chicago, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Explore the Solar System
Children are invited to participate in a hands-on astronomy program. Participants will have a chance to explore the planets, find out how comets are made and create their own star-finders. Space is limited to 20 participants.

Meet Author Rod Pyle
Author Rod Pyle, who has written several books on space science, will discuss his latest book “Destination Mars” on Monday, July 16. Pyle developed and presented leadership training for NASA at the Johnson Space Center. As a producer-writer, he created non-fiction programming for The History Channel and other clients. He also worked at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles for 10 years and was a vice president of the World Space Foundation, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory-affiliated space science institution. Copies of his books will be available for purchase at the event.

FUSION FOLK AMERICANA
Laurie Jennings and Dana Keller, an acoustic duo from Miami, Florida, will present Fusion Folk Americana on July 5. Jennings, a former Shakespearean actress, is a singer and songwriter. Keller is a veteran pedal steel, dobro and guitar player who has performed with Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs and Stevie Wonder. For more information, call (562) 916-1342.

“Dolphin Tale”
On Tuesday, July 10, the film “Dolphin Tale” (2012) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Based on true events, this family film is a story about a young dolphin that lost its tail in a crab trap and the 11-year-old boy, Sawyer, who befriends her. Sawyer rallies friends and family to save the dolphin by convincing a pioneering doctor to create a unique prosthetic appendage to restore the dolphin’s ability to swim. “Dolphin Tale” is rated PG and has a running time of 119 minutes.

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”
On Tuesday, July 17, the film “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012) will be screened in the Skyline Room. In the film, Sean Anderson receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist – a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather joins the quest, and with a helicopter pilot and his daughter, they set out to find the island. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is rated PG and has a running time of 94 minutes.

“Happy Feet Two”
On Tuesday, July 24, the film “Happy Feet Two” (2011) will be screened in the Skyline Room. The world’s most famous tap-dancing penguin, Mumble, and the love of his life, Gloria, now have a son of their own, Erik. Erik is struggling to find his talents in the Emperor Penguin world. But new dangers are threatening the penguin nation, and it’s going to take everyone working and dancing together to save them. “Happy Feet Two” is rated PG and has a running time of 100 minutes.

“Big Miracle”
On Tuesday, July 31, the film “Big Miracle” (2011) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Set in Cold War-era 1988, “Big Miracle” tells the true story of a small-town news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer who enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle. “Big Miracle” is rated PG and has a running time of 114 minutes.


SIDEWALK BOOK SALE

UNIVERSAL DANCE EXPRESSIONS
On Wednesday, July 18, Lamonte Tales Goode and Dino Mayorga, pioneers in Southern California’s street dance scene, will demonstrate their dynamic and exciting movements to upbeat dance music. Participants will learn traditional and evolved street dance styles and acro balance forms and technique. A series of stretches, dance formulas, dance philosophy and a bit of California street dance history will also be taught by the duo. MEET AUTHOR KARIN SLAUGHTER
Karin Slaughter, the critically acclaimed, internationally bestselling author of several thrillers will discuss and sign copies of her new novel “Criminal” on Sunday, July 22. Hands-on fun with instruments will be presented on Wednesday, August 1. Volunteers from the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra will give a short presentation explaining the different string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Library Displays

ART OF THE BOOK: ACCORDION FOLD BOOKS
A selection of artists' books made with an accordion fold will be on display throughout the Library until the end of September. An accordion fold is one of the most widely used methods in making artists' books. The Library's collection of accordion fold books includes several variations with a playful and versatile quality both in size and format. This is one of the ongoing displays that showcase unique pieces from the Library's special collection of artists' books.

VISIONS OF THE UNIVERSE: FOUR CENTURIES OF DISCOVERY
A special traveling exhibit, "Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery," is on display in the Craftsman area of the Library. The exhibit covers a wide range of topics related to the scientific exploration of the universe, including storms on the sun, features on the surface of Mars and the Moon, comets, star birth and distant galaxies. The display features historical drawings and diagrams made by Galileo and other early astronomers, along with dramatic contemporary images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions. The display shows how our views and understanding of the universe and the objects within it have changed over the centuries. The display is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association, Chicago, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The exhibit ends on July 20.

BICCI & ONRI RAILROAD
Come enjoy a Heckscher-Ohlin (HO) scale model Bicci & Onri Railroad created by Mick Terry. This 2' x 4' diorama is packed with detailed features of the mythical 1920's backwoods logging railroad town of "Broakdowlne," nestled in the "Low Tierras" of California. The expertly constructed diorama also includes historical backgrounds and stories about "Broakdowlne." This exhibit in the Children's Library will run through the end of July.
