Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.
How to Register In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.
On-line registration To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.
Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

MICROSOFT WORD INTERMEDIATE In this three-hour class, instructor Jason Galeener will teach participants how to use Microsoft Word 2007 at an intermediate level. The class is limited to 27 participants who should be familiar with the basic functions of Microsoft Word 2007.

ADVENTURES IN READING WITH JIM ADAMS Jim Adams, who is best known for appearing as “Pecos Bill,” the comic lead in Disneyland’s legendary “Golden Horseshoe Review,” will present a ventriloquist show featuring loads of laughs and lots of audience participation. PSAT PRACTICE TEST In collaboration with Kaplan Test Prep and Tutoring, a free full-length PSAT practice test will be held for students in grades 9 through 12 on Saturday, July 7. Test takers are encouraged to eat a hearty breakfast and arrive by 9:45 a.m. to sign in. Please bring a calculator and two No. 2 pencils.

Score Giveback/PSAT Test Strategies All test takers will receive a detailed score report showing their strengths & weaknesses on Tuesday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Skyline Room. ASTRONOMY EVENTS The following three events are being offered in support of the “Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery” exhibit presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association, Chicago, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Astronomy Night On Tuesday, June 5, students of the physics classes from Cerritos High School will present a special evening under the stars in the Skyline Room, the Terrace and the Esplanade outside the Library. Pinhole boxes will be available to view the Venus Transit at sunset along with telescopes for night viewing of Saturn with its rings, and other celestial bodies. In addition to several displays, PowerPoint presentations will be presented by the students.

Night Sky Viewing with L.A. Sidewalk Astronomers Bob Alborzian, a member of the L.A. Sidewalk Astronomers, will share his experience working for NASA and offer a presentation showing several photos of planets, stars and other celestial bodies. Following the talk, guests may view the night sky through telescopes located on the Library’s Skyline Room Terrace.

Telescope Making Workshop Children are invited to make their own telescope, modeled after the original one made by Galileo over 400 years ago. The workshop is limited to 22 students.

CYPRESS SENIOR CHORUS The Cypress Senior Chorus will perform songs featuring different areas of the United States. Come hear such favorites as “Shenandoah,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Simple Gifts,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and more. The choir is made up of retired older adults who love to sing and share music in the community. VOLUNTEENS NEEDED Cerritos Library is accepting applications from energetic and dedicated volunteens for the Summer Session which begins Monday, June 25. Typical duties include registering patrons for the Summer Reading Program, assisting with crafts and other events, shelving books and monitoring the Children’s workstations. SUMMER READING PROGRAM Registration for the popular 38th Summer Reading Program will be held Monday, June 25 through Sunday, July 8 in the Art Studio. The pirate related theme for all readers is “Arrr is for Reading.” This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Cerritos Library, which will provide book prizes and other incentives to encourage everyone to enjoy reading during the summer. SUMMER MOVIE MATINEE On Tuesday, July 3, the film “The Muppets” (2011) will be screened in the Skyline Room. To stage the Greatest Muppet telethon ever and raise $10 million to save the Muppet Theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit the Frog reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways. “The Muppets” is rated PG and has a running time of 98 minutes. MEET AUTHOR KARIN SLAUGHTER Karin Slaughter, the critically acclaimed, internationally bestselling author of several thrillers will discuss and sign copies of her new novel “Criminal” on Sunday, July 22. Library Displays
MOSAICS BY DAWN MENDELSON Several unusual and colorful mosaic pieces by Dawn Mendelson will be on display in the Library’s Lobby area until the end of June. Mendelson specializes in pique assiette (“stolen plate,”) using primarily broken and discarded china. The palette of this style is vast, including not just colors but patterns, textures and images from history. Mendelson has been studying and making mosaics for more than 11 years, and also creates large-scale murals.
PAINTINGS BY SOONBAE LEE Water-themed oil paintings by Soonbae Lee will be displayed in the Local History Museum until the end of June.
VISIONS OF THE UNIVERSE: FOUR CENTURIES OF DISCOVERY A special traveling exhibit, “Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery,” is on display in the Craftsman area of the Library. The exhibit covers a wide range of topics related to the scientific exploration of the universe, including storms on the sun, features on the surface of Mars and the Moon, comets, star birth and distant galaxies. The display features historical drawings and diagrams made by Galileo and other early astronomers, along with dramatic contemporary images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions. The display shows how our views and understanding of the universe and the objects within it have changed over the centuries. The display is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association, Chicago, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The exhibit ends on July 20.
