Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at www.cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

DISNEY TRIVIA FOR KIDS
Test your trivia knowledge with Disney’s “Scene It!” DVD game. This trivia game features everyone’s favorite Disney and Pixar clips. Seating is limited to 30 participants. For more information, please call (562) 916-1388.

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT 2007 TIPS & TRICKS
Go beyond the basic capabilities of PowerPoint in this three-hour, hands-on workshop. Instructor Jason Galeener will provide tips and tricks to help you create more interesting and effective presentations using PowerPoint 2007. DAVE BOATMAN’S CARTOON CLASS
In this educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction, Dave Boatman will teach participants how cartoons are used in our society, present warm-up and imagination exercises, provide drawing tips and demonstrate various cartoon facial expressions. HOMEWORK TIME
Do your children need help with their homework? Cerritos Library offers Homework Time, an after-school homework help program for Cerritos resident students in grades 3 through 6. The sessions will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. in the Art Studio of the Children’s Library. Space is limited to 12 participants. The course fee is $25. Parents must make sure that students bring to each class meeting their homework and a book to read or their library card to check out reading material. YOUNG REMBRANDTS WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN
Children can learn the finer points of art in this series of workshops presented by Young Rembrandts. Students will learn how to use markers to create colorful kimonos with intricate designs. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5. No refunds will be given. Additional workshops in the series will be held on April 5, May 3 and June 14. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

CARTOONING WORKSHOP
Cartoonist Tom Warburton will conduct a special cartooning workshop for kids on March 8. Warburton, also an illustrator, director and creator of the original television series “Codename: Kids Next Door” and Disney’s latest hit series “Fish Hooks,” will teach participants how to draw themselves as one of the “Kids Next Door” characters and illustrate a super villain. Participants will also learn techniques used by artists to develop storyboards for current animated television shows. Space is limited to 50 participants. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

FRIDAY AT THE MOVIES
On Friday, February 4, the film “Despicable Me” (2010) will be screened in the Skyline Room. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, the evil character Gru vanquishes all who stand in his way until the day he encounters three orphaned girls who look at him and see something no one else has ever seen. “Despicable Me” is rated PG and has a running time of 95 minutes.

FAMILY NIGHT: JOHN ABRAMS MAGIC SHOW
Join us for a high-energy, 45-minute magic show with John Abrams and his live exotic pets. This magic show will involve audience participation and will feature at least four live animals which could include chinchillas, Silkie chickens, doves, tarantulas, tortoises, bunnies, flying squirrels, snakes and more. MEET MYSTERY AUTHOR MAGGIE SEFTON
“New York Times” bestselling author Maggie Sefton will discuss the eighth book in the Kelly Flynn knitting mystery series, “Skein of the Crime” on Thursday, February 10. Kelly Flynn is in her early 30s and is a shrewd CPA who loves to play softball and solve crimes with the help of a group of friends at “Lambspun Wool,” a shop for knitters. Readers love the mix of characters, the lovable dog and faithful protector Carl, and the knitting patterns included in each book. Books will be available for purchase. ASTRONOMY NIGHT
On Friday, February 11, the Introductory Physical Science classes from Cerritos High School will present a special evening under the stars in the Skyline Room, the Terrace and the Esplanade outside the Library. Several telescopes will be set up to view the moon, Jupiter and its moons, and other celestial delights. In addition to several displays, the students will present PowerPoint presentations. MEET AUTHOR CARA CHOW
Author Cara Chow will discuss her book for teens “Bitter Melon” on Wednesday, February 23. Growing up in the 1980s, Frances, a Chinese-American student at an academically competitive school in San Francisco, has always been taught to be obedient to her mother and to be a straight-A student so that she can go to medical school. When she accidentally winds up in speech class and finds herself with a hidden talent, Frances does not know how to challenge the mother who has sacrificed everything for her. CONTESTS FOR TALENTED TEENS
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the 13th Annual Teen Contests to encourage teens to explore their talents. The contests in art, photography, poetry and short story are open to all students in grades 7 through 12 with valid Cerritos Library cards. All entries must be original. Only one entry per person is allowed for each category. Gift certificates to a local bookstore will be presented to the winners at a reception in May. Entry forms are available at the Library. MEET CHILDREN’S AUTHOR OLIVER CHIN
On Monday, March 7, author and artist Oliver Chin will discuss his children’s book “Year of the Rabbit” which is part of the popular annual series “Tales from the Chinese Zodiac.” Chin was called “an expert on Pacific Rim pop culture” by the “San Jose Mercury News” and has written several books for children. MEET PROMINENT AFRICAN AMERICAN AUTHORS
The Links, Incorporated Orange County Chapter is partnering with the National Black MBA Association Los Angeles Chapter and the Cerritos Library to offer a special opportunity to meet several prominent African American authors. EIGHTH ANNUAL ORCHID SHOW
The popular Orchid Show will be held Friday, February 25 through Sunday, February 27. The show will run from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A large variety of orchid plants, paintings and photographs will be featured.

Library Displays

ART OF THE BOOK: CALIFORNIA ARTISTS
A selection of artists’ books made by California artists will be on display throughout the Library until the end of March. This display is part of the ongoing showcase of the unique pieces from the Library’s special collection of artists’ books.

COLORFUL QUILTS
The Woman’s Club of Artesia-Cerritos quilters group will display a collection of exquisite quilts in the Library’s lobby area until the end of February.

PAINTINGS BY NIRALI THAKKAR
Realistic paintings and drawings by award-winning artist Nirali Thakkar will be on display in the Local History Museum of the Library through the end of February.

MICKEY MOUSE THROUGH THE YEARS
Come enjoy a collection of Mickey Mouse memorabilia through the years, including watches, songbooks, records and snow globes. The collection includes representations of Mickey Mouse in his early years as “Steam Boat Willie” and current depictions of the Mickey loved by children all over the world. These items from the collection of Carrie Kurata will be on display in the Young Adult area through the end of February.
