HOLIDAY PAJAMA PARTY
Children ages 7 to 11 are invited to join us for a Holiday Pajama Party on Friday, December 10. Storytellers will present lively stories, music, a movie and a craft. DAVE BOATMAN’S CARTOON CLASS
During this educational, creative and interactive hour of cartoon instruction, Dave Boatman will present warm-up and imagination exercises, provide drawing tips and demonstrate various facial expressions in cartoons. HOMEWORK TIME
Do your children need help with their homework? Cerritos Library offers Homework Time, an after-school homework help program for Cerritos resident students in grades 3 through 6. The sessions will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. in the Art Studio of the Children’s Library. Space is limited to 12 participants. Course fee is $25. Parents must make sure that students bring to each class meeting their homework and a book to read or their library card to check out reading material. GLASS ARMONICA RECITAL
William Zeitler will perform classical pieces by Mozart and Beethoven along with several familiar songs on the glass armonica. Invented by Benjamin Franklin, this musical instrument uses a series of glass bowls or goblets graduated in size to produce musical tones by means of friction. Zeitler, who is one of the few musicians trained to perform on the armonica, will also talk about its history and answer questions.

SUNDAY MOVIE MATINEE
On Sunday, December 12, the film “A Christmas Carol” (2009) will be screened. This updated adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic features Jim Carrey in four separate roles. In the film, the old miser Scrooge must face the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come. The spirits must help bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart and remind him of the man he used to be. This movie is rated PG and has a running time of 96 minutes. PIANO RECITAL BY ALBER CHIEN
Award-winning pianist Alber Chien will present an evening of classical music on Friday, December 17 celebrating the 200th anniversary of the births of Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann. “A MORE PERFECT UNION” CONTESTS FOR STUDENTS
Contests in art, photography and poetry for students in grades kindergarten through 12 based on the theme “A More Perfect Union” are now under way. These contests are being held in honor of the Library’s recent “We the People Bookshelf” award from the National Endowment for the Humanities. All entries must be original and based on the books in the We the People Bookshelf, which includes the titles “Tico and the Golden Wings,” “The Great Little Madison,” “Eagle Song,” “Hitch” and “Twelve Angry Men.” The complete booklist and entry forms with detailed information about the contests is available at the Children’s Desk and on the Library’s website. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY ART & WRITING CONTESTS
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the City of Cerritos is offering art and writing contests for students with Cerritos Library cards. The theme is “I Have a Dream. What can I do to promote equality, justice and peace in my community, neighborhood or school?” Only one entry is allowed per student per category. All entries must be turned in to the Children’s Help Desk at the Library by Monday, January 3 at 9 p.m. The winning entries will be on display during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ceremony on Monday, January 17 and at the Library until the end of January. Art Contest
The Art Contest is open to students in grades K-12. Contestants are encouraged to create an imaginative picture using paints, crayons or any other medium. All artwork must be no larger than 12” x 18” and should not be mounted.
Writing Contest
The writing contest is open to students in grades 7-12. Entries, either a poem or an essay, must be original, no more than 300 words, and preferably typed on white letter-size paper.
EIGHTH ANNUAL ORCHID SHOW
The popular Orchid Show will be held Friday, February 25 through Sunday, February 27. A large variety of plants will be featured. SCIENCE ONLINE DATABASE AVAILABLE
Cerritos Library now offers the award-winning Science Online database from Facts on File. The comprehensive, curriculum-oriented overview of a broad range of scientific disciplines is organized by subject area and resource type. Users can follow an extensive network of hyperlinks and suggested searches to find the desired results. Science Online presents more than 1,000 science experiments and activities, as well as images, videos and animations. This useful resource for students and educators is now available in the Library. Cerritos Library card holders can access the database from home by visiting http://catalog.ci.cerritos.ca.us.

ART OF THE BOOK: INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS’ BOOKS
A selection of international artists’ books spotlighting cultures around the world will be on display until the end of December. Poetry, fairy tales and prose in many languages are featured in these books, created with special types of paper, metal and a variety of other materials. This display is part of the ongoing showcase of the unique pieces from the Library’s special collection of artists’ books.
BARBIE DOLLS
A variety of special edition Barbie dolls will be on display in the Library’s lobby area until the end of December. These beautiful dolls are from the collection of Brenda Sunio.
INSPIRATION: PHOTOGRAPHS BY KWI NAM CONNIE KIM
Kwi Nam Connie Kim has captured the breathtaking beauty of nature in her photographs, which are on view in the Local History Museum through the end of December.
MILITARY MEMORABILIA
A variety of military items including photographs, medals, flags and pins is on display in the Young Adult area through the end of December. This special tribute to our country’s armed forces was made possible by Allen Montgomery and Gabriel Sanchez.
