HOMEWORK TIME
Do your children need help with their homework? Cerritos Library offers Homework Time, an after-school homework help program for Cerritos resident students in grades 3 through 6. Space is limited to 12 participants. The course fee is $25. Parents must make sure that students bring to each class meeting their homework and either a book to read or their library card to check out reading material. A parent or a designated individual is required to sign students in and out of each class meeting. For more information, call (562) 916-1388. FINGER KNITTING
In this two-hour class, participants will learn how to “finger knit,” or knit without needles. Participants will knit simple chains using one or two different colored strands of yarn which can then be connected to form scarves and other items. Space is limited to 35 participants. FAMILY NIGHT: TREASURES OF THE ATOCHA
On Wednesday, December 14, treasure diver Rick Daynes will present an interactive program about diving for lost treasures. Hear the inspiring story of Mel Fisher, who unlocked the mysteries of the Spanish Empire and gave us the opportunity to view the remains of 17th century Spain through his many expeditions. Members of the audience may have the rare opportunity to handle genuine treasures such as Spanish pieces of eight (silver coins), or a valuable emerald recovered from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the richest Spanish treasure galleon ever lost. Join us as we unlock the mysteries of the Spanish Empire during this unforgettable journey through history. MYSTERY ON THE MENU
The Friends of the Cerritos Library will host the seventh Mystery on the Menu luncheon with 15 award-winning authors on Saturday, January 28. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY ART & WRITING CONTESTS
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the City of Cerritos is offering art and writing contests for students with Cerritos Library cards. The theme is “Sharing the dream; change begins with me.” Only one entry is allowed per student per category. All entries must be turned in to the Children’s Help Desk at the Library by Tuesday, January 3 at 9 p.m. The winning entries will be on display during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ceremony on Monday, January 16 and at the Library until the end of January. Art Contest
The Art Contest is open to students in grades K-12. Contestants are encouraged to create an imaginative picture using paints, crayons or any other medium. All artwork must be no larger than 12” x 18” and should not be mounted.
Writing Contest
The writing contest is open to students in grades 7-12. Entries, either a poem or an essay, must be original, no more than 300 words, and preferably typed on white letter-size paper.
Library Displays
ART OF THE BOOK: ASIAN INFLUENCES
A selection of artists’ books with Asian influences will be on display throughout the Library until the end of December. Portfolio, pop-up, scroll and tunnel books will also be on display. This display is one of the ongoing exhibits showcasing the unique pieces from the Library’s special collection of artists’ books.
COLLECTIBLE SANTAS
An assortment of colorful Santa dolls from the collection of Cerritos resident Evangeline Niebres Manantan will be on display in the Local History Museum through the end of December.
JAPANESE DOLLS
An exhibition of traditional Japanese Hinamatsuri dolls displayed during Girls’ Day and Gogatsu Ningyo dolls displayed for Boys’ Day will be available for viewing in the Lobby of the Library through the end of December. These colorful Japanese dolls are from the collection of Noelle Spychala.
MODEL TRAINS
Collecting model trains is a hobby enjoyed by young and old. A variety of model trains by Lionel and other brands will be displayed in the Young Adult area through the end of December. These collector’s items are on loan from the collection of Harry “Butch” Dantema.
