Cerritos Library is a popular learning destination for the entire community. To best serve patrons’ needs, advance registration is required for some Cerritos Library programs. Please see the information below to learn how and when to register for the programs which require registration. For more information, please call Cerritos Library at (562) 916-1388.

How to Register
In order to register, patrons must be in the City’s class registration database and have obtained a family account access PIN number and individual family member personal numbers.

On-line registration
To check the availability of classes or to register for classes, please visit the Cerritos home page at www.cerritos.us and look for the on-line registration link. The program, eConnect, is best viewed with Internet Explorer. Before registering for classes on-line, print the eConnect User’s Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted as payment. For additional information and/or to obtain the PIN numbers, please call the Library Reservation Desk at (562) 916-1388. Computers at the Cerritos Library may be used to access eConnect.

ORIGAMI WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS
In this series of workshops, instructor Juliet Lee will teach children the paper folding art of origami. On Tuesday, October 11, participants will learn how to make an origami crane. On Tuesday, November 8, participants will learn how to make an origami greeting card and envelope. Space is limited to 20 participants. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY & BRUSH ART FOR KIDS
As part of the Library’s Cultural Art workshop series, children ages 7 to 12 are invited to learn the history of traditional Chinese calligraphy and brush art and try their hand at these ancient art forms. Participants will create their own masterpieces and learn the history and significance of the tools used. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR KIDS

YOUNG REMBRANDTS
Children can learn the finer points of art in this series of workshops presented by Young Rembrandts. Students will use colored pencils to re-create world-renowned artist Henri Rousseau’s painting of a jungle scene. Seating is limited to 20. The fee is $5. No refunds will be given. MICROSOFT EXCEL TIPS & TRICKS
In this three-hour Microsoft Excel 2007 class, instructor Jason Galeener will provide tips and tricks for formatting spreadsheets, sorting and filtering lists, and creating professional-looking graphs. DAVE BOATMAN’S CARTOON CLASS
In this educational, creative and interactive cartoon workshop, Dave Boatman will teach participants how cartoons are used in our society. He will present warm-up and imagination exercises, provide drawing tips and demonstrate how to draw various cartoon facial expressions. POINTILLISM WORKSHOP
On Friday, October 28, award-winning artist Lucien van Oosten, who is proficient in pencil, colored pencil, pen/ink and mixed media drawing techniques, will present a hands-on workshop featuring pointillism. SAT ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP
Kaplan Test Prep Admissions will present an SAT essay writing workshop on November 7. Students will write a practice essay under timed, test-like conditions after learning how to write effective essays and what examiners look for while grading the essays. MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH CHALLENGE
Volunteen Stephan Cho welcomes middle school students to a math challenge. Students will be encouraged to go beyond what they learn in school and test their skills in math. Little “ghouls” and boys will find some seasonal entertainment that’s more silly than scary with Kiddle Karoo’s Halloween Adventure. This is a “spooktacular” non-scary, fun-filled musical Halloween adventure that kids will love. Kiddle’s puppet pal Molly is afraid of everything. SUNDAY MOVIE MATINEE
The film “Rango” (2011) will be screened on Sunday, October 16. This animated comedy-adventure follows the comical journey of Rango, a sheltered chameleon living as an ordinary family pet. When Rango accidentally winds up in the gritty, gun-slinging town of Dirt, he finds himself trying to play the role of the new Sheriff. “Rango” is rated PG and has a running time of 107 minutes. CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY DEMONSTRATION & LECTURE
Join us for a lecture and demonstration by Dan Zhu of the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy. Zhu is the Vice President of the California Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Academy and Secretary of Lanting California Calligraphy Association. Zhu will discuss the history of this ancient art form and give a demonstration using the “Four Treasures of the Study,” which include the ink brush, ink stick, paper and ink stone. Through these tools, the beauty of Chinese Art receives concrete expression. The use of seals in place of signatures, seal cutting and engraving, and seal sculpture will also be discussed. Selected items from Zhu’s private collection will be on display.

This one-hour workshop is designed to show students and parents what college admission officers want to see in an essay. The workshop will cover the types of topics students will encounter, offer four steps to writing a winning essay and critique a sample admissions essay. CHILDREN’S ART & WRITING CONTESTS
Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the Ninth Annual art contest for children in grades K through 6 and a short story contest for children in grades 3 through 6. The theme of the contests is “My Favorite Holiday.” The deadline to turn in entries at the Children’s Help Desk is Friday, October 7 before 9 p.m. Fliers and application forms with contest rules are available at the Children’s Help Desk. Art contest
For the art contest, create a picture using your imagination to depict a favorite holiday. The picture can be created with paints, crayons or any other medium. Artwork must be no larger than 12” x 18” and unmounted. Only one art entry is allowed per child.

Short story contest
For the short story contest, write an original short story about a favorite holiday using no more than 400 words, and preferably typed on white letter size paper. Only one short story entry is allowed per child.


Library Displays

ART OF THE BOOK: ASIAN INFLUENCES
A selection of artists’ books with Asian influences will be on display throughout the Library until the end of December. Portfolio, pop-up, scroll and tunnel books will also be on display. This display is one of the ongoing exhibits showcasing the unique pieces from the Library’s special collection of artists’ books.

DR. SUN YAT-SEN & 1911 REVOLUTION EXHIBITION
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of China’s Revolution and the beginning of the Chinese Republic, several replicas of photographs, manuscripts, historical documents, stamps, first day covers and other items on Dr. Sun Yat-sen will be on display in the lobby until October 24th. Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866–1925) was the leader of the Chinese Revolution.

EARTH AS ART
Pastel representations of NASA’s Earth as Art created by artist Ron Schrantz will be displayed in the Local History Museum through the end of October.

HOLLYWOOD MEMORABILIA
A collection of signed photographs of Hollywood legends will be on display in the Young Adult area until the end of October. These collectors’ items are on loan from the collection of Gary Hill.
