SAT PRACTICE TEST
In collaboration with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, a free full-length SAT practice test will be held for students in grades 9 to 11 on Saturday, September 10. Space is limited to 50 students. Test takers are encouraged to eat a hearty breakfast and arrive by 8:45 a.m. to sign in. Please bring a calculator, two No. 2 pencils and snacks to eat during the short breaks. HOMEWORK TIME
Do your children need help with their homework? Cerritos Library offers Homework Time, an after-school homework help program for Cerritos resident students in grades 3 through 6. Space is limited to 12 participants. The course fee is $25. Parents must make sure that students bring to each class meeting their homework and either a book to read or their library card to check out reading material. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: KA SHEN’S JOURNEY
In collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society, the film “To Whom It May Concern: Ka Shen’s Journey” will be screened on Monday, September 12. This film portrays the life of the Eurasian film star Nancy Kwan, who acted in movies such as “The World of Suzie Wong” (1960) and the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical “Flower Drum Song” (1961). FAMILY NIGHT – PUPPET SHOW
Come enjoy “The Wrong Way Home,” a puppet show presented by Hey Hey Entertainment. Tiny the Elephant has packed his trunk and said so long to the circus. On his way home to Africa, Tiny takes a wrong turn and ends up in foreign lands. Now, Tiny needs help from the locals and the kids in the audience to get home safely! “AUTUMN GEM:” A DOCUMENTARY ON
MODERN CHINA’S FIRST FEMINIST
On Thursday, September 22 the film “Autumn Gem” will be screened. This film explores the extraordinary life of the “Chinese Joan of Arc” Qiu Jin (1875 to 1907). A radical women’s rights activist, Qiu Jin defied tradition to become the leader of a revolutionary army. She attempted an armed uprising against the corrupt Qing Dynasty and became the first female martyr for China’s 1911 Revolution, and she continues to inspire Chinese women today. The hour-long film was produced and directed by Rae Chang and Adam Tow, Chinese American filmmakers from the San Francisco area. For more information, call (562) 916-1342.

CHILDREN’S ART & WRITING CONTESTS
Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the Ninth Annual art contest for children in grades K through 6 and a short story contest for children in grades 3 through 6. The theme of the contests is ”My Favorite Holiday.” The deadline to turn in entries at the Children’s Help Desk is Friday, October 7 before 9 p.m. Fliers and application forms with contest rules are available at the Children’s Help Desk. For the art contest, create a picture using your imagination to depict a favorite holiday with paints, crayons or any other medium. Artwork must be no larger than 12” x 18” and unmounted. Only one art entry is allowed per child.
Short stories about a favorite holiday must be original, using no more than 400 words, and preferably typed on white letter size paper. Only one short story entry is allowed per child.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The 37th Summer Reading Program ended successfully with 426 adults, 623 kids and 189 teens completing the reading requirements to earn free paperback books donated by the Friends of the Cerritos Library. All the summer programs, movies and related events were well attended.
