Berkeley Visionary Awards recognizes three UC Berkeley innovators making tremendous impacts

On September 11, three UC Berkeley innovators (Amy Herr, Mike Cohen, and Scott Shenker) were honored at the Berkeley Visionary Awards ceremony for the ways they are shaping the future in their respective fields.  Organized by the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce and held at the Berkeley Repertory Theater, UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ served as the event’s keynote speaker and the City of Berkeley's City Manager Dee Williams-Ridley closed the event, offering strong City support for fostering a local innovation ecosystem.

UC Berkeley Inclusion in Entrepreneurship Summit brings together more than 400 local entrepreneurs

On September 15th, UC Berkeley’s first Inclusion in Entrepreneurship Summit event brought together over 400 entrepreneurs from varied backgrounds to help them understand opportunities to gain access to federal, state, and local resources for startups. More than 25 federal agencies and 75 investors from the Bay Area participated in panel discussions and met with local entrepreneurs, resulting in more than 500 one-to-one meetings and many new venture capitalists who will become mentors at Berkeley accelerators.

UC Berkeley Big Ideas Information Session

UC Berkeley Big Ideas is an annual contest aimed at providing funding, support, and encouragement to interdisciplinary teams of students who have “big ideas” aimed at solving problems that matter to this generation. If your team has at least one member that is a current UC Berkeley matriculated student and have a project-idea in mind that is student-initiated and student-led Interested, join the 2017-2018 Big Ideas Contest information session to learn about this year’s goals, categories, timeline, and application requirements.

UC Berkeley's startup accelerator, SkyDeck, has established itself as an integral part of the city's innovative culture and a hub for talented Cal entrepreneurs. By installing the SkyDeck sign on two sides of the 13-story building's rooftop, the SkyDeck Building (as it will be called thereafter) will celebrate Berkeley born and bred innovation. Join the SkyDeck community as we celebrate the sign's unveiling!

Applications due this week for The House Residency Accelerator 

October 6 (this Friday): deadline to apply for The House Residency startup accelerator

The House Residency is a startup accelerator program providing Berkeley students, faculty, and alumni with the resources required to turn a startup into a scalable, venture-backed business, including investment (of up to $120k) to all companies that join the program. Apply now -the House Residency's Fall 2017 application cycle ends this week.

Applications due this week for Berkeley Angel Network Investment

October 6 (this Friday): deadline for Berkeley Angel Network proposals

The Berkeley Angel Network is an angel investor community comprised of UC Berkeley alumni and faculty. The Network seeks capital-efficient proposals from companies that will be able to achieve growth and success without the need for large amounts of follow-on investment. The Fall 2017 application cycle ends this week.

Applications Open for the Cyclotron Road Accelerator  

Now - October 31: Fall application window for Cyclotron Road's Fourth Cohort

Cyclotron Road provides two-year fellowships to support entrepreneurial scientists and engineers developing energy technologies based in the physical and biological sciences. Fellows are embedded at Berkeley Lab, where they work to bring their ideas to the point of commercial viability. The program provides access to facilities, equipment, and expertise at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley, initial research funding, and a rewarding mentorship experience.

Apply to Join the CITRIS Foundry Accelerator

Now - October 27: Fall application window for the 2017 Startup Cohort

The CITRIS Foundry (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) is a University of California applied technology accelerator based at UC Berkeley that supports early stage startups developing transformative technology. The CITRIS Foundry is currently taking applications for their 12-month program which will allow selected startups to receive funding, deep tech mentorship, and access to University of California laboratories.

BERKELEY ENTREPRENEURS MAKING NEWS


Berkeley-based Packlane in Forbes magazine

Packlane, founded by Bay Area native Miriam Brafman, was featured in an article of the Entrepreneurship section of Forbes Magazine in September. Brafman was unable to find a vendor who could provide customized shipping boxes for her products, which led her to become the founder of a company whose website allows brands of all types to custom-make and order boxes for their products.

Berkeley Healthcare Machine Learning Startup secures $5M Financing

Cogitativo, a Berkeley-based machine learning and data science-as-a-service company for healthcare organizations closed a $5 million Series A funding round. The investment was made by HCSV Ventures, Inc, a corporation that specializes in innovative health care companies. Cogitativo has tripled in size over the past two years and is on the way to make a significant impact in the health care industry.
