Benicia Police Seize 59 Firearms from a Benicia Residence

On October 27, 2011, at about 9:10 pm, a 20 year old Martinez, CA, resident, called the Benicia Police Department to report she had been receiving harassing phone calls from 49 year old Benicia resident, Ronald Sandy, who lives on the 300 block of East O St.  Benicia Police Officer Damiean Sylvester initiated an investigation, obtained statements from the parties involved, and learned that Sandy was a convicted felon out of Utah for possession of methamphetamine. Officer Sylvester also learned that Sandy was in the illegal possession of several firearms, including a Uzi assault weapon.

Benicia Officers responded to Sandy's residence and Sandy admitted to possessing several firearms that belonged to his deceased father and was storing them for his step mother (at the time of this release it is not know the exact city or address of the step mother). Sandy cooperated with the officers and showed them the weapons that were found secure in two different guns safes within the home. In all, officer confiscated 46 longs guns (shotguns & rifles, one was a illegal sawed-off shotgun), 13 handguns (including the illegal 9mm UZI), along with miscellaneous ammunition for the weapons.

Sandy was arrested without incident and booked into the Solano County Jail for being a felon in possession of firearms (felony), possession of a rifle having a barrel length less than 18 inches (the sawed off shotgun, a felony), possession of an assault weapon (the UZI, a felony) and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon (a felony).

"Although they knew Sandy may have had some firearms in his home,  officers were surprised to find such a large cache of both rifles and handguns," Benicia Police Lt. Mike Daley said.  "Again, police officers face the very real danger every day of dealing with people who illegally possess firearms.  In this case, even if this person was not a convicted felon, officers came across a sawed off shotgun and Uzi assault weapon that have now been removed from our community."
