This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending our annual Community Recognition Dinner, where we celebrated our incredible volunteers, nonprofit organizations, Youth Commissioners, and honored this year’s Gateway Award recipient, Heidi Zipay. As our City’s most prestigious recognition, the Gateway Award represents the very best of community service – acknowledging individuals whose dedication, leadership, and lasting impact set them apart. Congratulations Heidi on this well-deserved honor, and my sincere thanks to all our volunteers and community partners who continue to make a meaningful difference every day in American Canyon.
It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s a flying loo! We’re also excited to share the progress at Northampton Park and Silver Oak Park, where our new restroom facilities arrived this week and are being installed. This important park amenity directly enhances the experience for our residents, and will bring greater comfort, accessibility, and convenience to two of our well-loved parks.
Finally, I invite you to join us for the upcoming City Council meeting on May 5 at 6:30 p.m., where the Council will be discussing the Public Draft Parks and Recreation Master Plan and reviewing polling results related to a potential sales tax measure. This is an important opportunity to share your input and help shape the future of our community.
Thank you for all that you do to make American Canyon such a vibrant and engaged community. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Each year, the Community Recognition Dinner gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on what truly makes American Canyon such a special place, and this year’s event was no exception. We gathered to celebrate the incredible volunteers and nonprofit organizations who dedicate their time, energy, and passion to serving others. Their work provides essential services, creates meaningful programs and events, and helps meet the needs of our multigenerational and multicultural community. Because of their efforts, American Canyon continues to be a place where people feel connected, supported, and proud to call home. This year’s celebration carried added significance as we honored an extraordinary member of our community, Fran Lemos, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Fran, who moved to American Canyon in 1947, was instrumental in shaping the city we know today. She played a key role in the city’s incorporation in 1992 and served on the Fire District Board of Directors and former County Water District Board, always working to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents.
Fran was the heart of American Canyon and had a remarkable way of making everyone feel valued, seen, and encouraged. Her love for this community—from its rugged hills and canyons to its people—was evident in everything she did. She was a steadfast advocate for doing what was right and always putting American Canyon first. Following her recent passing, we are reminded of the lasting impact she made on so many. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to guide and inspire us. American Canyon is stronger because of Fran Lemos.
As we reflect on this year’s event, I encourage everyone to recognize and thank those who give so much to our community, and to consider how each of us can play a role in continuing the spirit of service.

Memorial Day Ceremony
Memorial Day is a time for our community to pause, reflect and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We invite you to join us on Monday, May 25, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (2801 Broadway Street) as we come together in remembrance.
