Walgreens Theft Leads to Vehicle Pursuit and Two Arrests
AMERICAN CANYON, Calif., Oct. 22, 2025 — On Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, an American Canyon Police motor officer conducted a traffic stop on a black Hyundai Kona on Broadway near Veterans Park. The vehicle had just been involved in a theft at the nearby Walgreens.
Shortly after initially yielding, the driver fled and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued onto westbound Interstate 80 at high speeds through traffic until the suspect lost control and collided with the center median just before the San Pablo Dam Road exit.
With the assistance of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol, American Canyon officers safely took the driver, 28-year-old Dontarion Layne, and passenger 30-year-old Njeri Harambe, both residents of Oakland, into custody. As Layne exited the vehicle, stolen merchandise was observed falling out of his hoodie.
A search of the vehicle revealed four large bags containing stolen items from Walgreens and other retail stores. The Walgreens merchandise alone was valued at just under $4,000.
Both suspects were transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation before being transported to Napa County and booked into jail.
Charges for both suspects included shoplifting with two or more priors, conspiracy and grand theft. Layne was also charged with felony evading a peace officer with willful disregard for public safety, and Harambe was additionally booked on her with an outstanding robbery warrant out of Orange County.
