Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty After Disturbance at American Canyon Walmart

AMERICAN CANYON, Calif., June 11, 2025 — On Tuesday evening, June 10, just after 7 p.m., American Canyon Police responded to Walmart following reports of a suspicious man who had been following a woman and her child.

The woman told police that the man had followed her into three separate businesses: Dunkin’ Donuts, Panda Express and eventually Walmart. While inside Walmart, the man began throwing random items into her cart and the cart of another customer. Concerned for her safety, the woman alerted store staff, who contacted 911.

The situation escalated when the man grabbed a bottle of harsh cleaning chemical from a shelf and sprayed a small dog belonging to another woman in the face and across its body. The dog yelped in pain and showed signs of distress from the chemical exposure.

Officers arrived quickly and located the suspect walking outside the store. He initially gave a false name, but officers used a mobile fingerprint scanner to identify him as 37-year-old Curtis Jonathan Anderson. Anderson, who stated he is unhoused and stays at various shelters throughout the Bay Area, was arrested without incident.

Anderson was booked into the Napa County Jail on a charge of cruelty to an animal. As of Wednesday morning, the dog is recovering and reported to be doing well.
