Hello,
Presidential elections are always big, but this one feels more compelling than ever. Last time, only 40% of our eligible voters voted. Hopefully, more will participate.
By now, you should have at least opened your ballot. But where should you start?
There are 10 statewide measures, along with who will represent American Canyon in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. With all the important questions, it’s hard to ignore the feeling of statistical abyss.
My advice: focus locally because there are several questions directly related to American Canyon.
Quick tip: your ballot will be counted even if you leave some questions blank, so don’t stress about answering each one. Just begin with what you know — like the Mayor and City Council races.
If you didn’t already know, Mayor Leon Garcia is retiring. After 22 years, who should replace him?
As far as the other vacancies on City Council, which two of the four candidates are best to fill those roles?
Have you thought about Measure U? Should we use a portion of sales tax to fund local streets maintenance and transportation projects?
What about schools? Who should represent American Canyon at the Napa Valley Unified School District and the Napa County Board of Education?
You’ve no doubt encountered these candidates canvassing the neighborhood. There’s no more direct place to become engaged than at the local level.
American Canyon’s future is brighter than ever! We are a destination for families and retirees.
But after the election is over, there’s a lot of work ahead. Every first and third Tuesday, you are invited to share your perspectives directly to the City Council. While you may not like their decisions, the Council will listen to you prior to voting. Now imagine trying to access your representatives in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. — things simply don’t work that way.
Until then, join me in cheering on our candidates throughout this election process. It takes a special kind of bravery to put oneself out there by running for public office. Stay open and engaged with your fellow community members and continue to support meaningful dialogue with each other.
Voting centers are now open. All ballots must be submitted by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5. Do your part — vote!
Take care, Jason B. Holley City Manager
