American Canyon hosts Memorial Day ceremony

AMERICAN CANYON, CA, May 23, 2024 - American Canyon warmly invites the community to come together this Memorial Day to honor the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice as members of the United States Military. The community-led ceremony will be held on Monday, May 27, from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Veteran Memorials Park, located at 2801 Broadway St.

The event will feature commemorative ceremonies, speeches by esteemed guests, musical tributes and a special flyover by two A-10 Warthogs from the 47th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona.

“Memorial Day is a sacred occasion to pay respects to our fallen heroes and their loved ones,” said American Canyon Mayor Leon Garcia. “We invite everyone in the community to join us in honoring their courage and selflessness.”

The ceremony will begin with a welcome message from the U.S. Army Sgt. Jeremy Profitt, a retired veteran who served in Afghanistan OEF in 2002 and Iraq OIF in 2003-2004. This will be followed by the flyover by two A-10 Warthogs from the 47th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, a special occasion organized by American Canyon Troop Support.

The American Canyon Army Recruiting Station will conduct a Raising of Colors, followed by the National Anthem performed by American Canyon High School’s Public Display of Acapella and the Pledge of Allegiance by Canyon Oaks Elementary School students. An invocation will be delivered by Alan Brazil of Open Door Church.

Luca Moretti, from the office of Congressman Mike Thompson, will share a message, and Mayor Leon Garcia will then present a City Council proclamation recognizing Memorial Day.

The keynote speaker for the event is Delphine Metcalf-Foster, a disabled U.S. Army veteran who was injured in 1991 while serving in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm/Desert Shield. She retired as a first sergeant in 1996 and has since been a dedicated advocate for veterans, serving as the National Commander of the 1 million-member Disabled American Veterans organization from 2017-2018.

The program will continue with a remembrance ceremony involving a flag placement and the Ringing of the Bell, concluding with a performance of Taps by Jesse Martinez from American Canyon High School.

“It’s inspiring to come together as a community for this meaningful tribute, and we extend our gratitude to all who helped organize this event,” said Councilmember, United States Navy Veteran and VFW Post 1123 Jr. Vice Commander Pierre Washington. “Together, we thank our military heroes and ensure that their selfless acts are never forgotten.”

The City would like to thank and recognize Gold Star Families, American Canyon Troop Support, VFW Post 1123, American Canyon Community Church, American Canyon Army Recruiting Station, American Canyon High School’s Public Display of Acapella, Canyon Oaks Elementary School students, Open Door Church, Jesse Martinez, Delphine Metcalf-Foster, Jeremy Profitt, American Canyon Starbucks, Fran Lemos, Sindy Biederman, Beth Marcus, Hugh Marquez and Mark & Julie Foster.
