Vehicle pursuit leads to arrest of dangerous felon
AMERICAN CANYON, Calif., February 23, 2024 - At 10:39 PM last night, officers of the American Canyon Police Department (ACPD) initiated a traffic stop in the vicinity of American Canyon Road and Broadway Street on a Hyundai SUV for vehicle code violations. What began as a routine stop swiftly escalated into a high-speed pursuit, culminating in the apprehension of a dangerous suspect.
The driver of the Hyundai SUV, later identified as 35-year-old Jose Joaquin Comacho Castillo, displayed a blatant disregard for public safety by evading law enforcement at speeds more than 85 miles per hour. During the pursuit, Castillo recklessly maneuvered over double yellow lines and directed his vehicle towards officers, putting their lives at risk.
ACPD, in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol (CHP), engaged in a coordinated effort to apprehend Castillo. Despite multiple attempts to halt the fleeing vehicle, including the utilization of Pursuit Intervention Techniques (PIT), Castillo persistently evaded capture, leading officers on a harrowing chase back towards the City of Vallejo.
The pursuit reached its peak when Castillo's vehicle lost a tire, rendering it inoperable near Frisbee Lane. Determined to evade capture, Castillo abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Swift and decisive action by ACPD officers, supported by K9 Brick and CHP Air Ops, resulted in the successful apprehension of Castillo.
Subsequent investigation revealed that Castillo was in possession of a loaded and concealed firearm, in violation of multiple felony charges including prior felon in possession of a firearm and assault on a peace officer. Furthermore, Castillo was found to be the subject of two felony no-bail warrants issued out of Alameda County.
Castillo has been remanded into custody at the Napa County Department of Corrections, where he awaits judicial proceedings regarding his egregious actions.
The American Canyon Police Department urges anyone with additional information regarding this incident to contact the department at (707) 551-0600.
