American Canyon Police Department successfully apprehends two suspects following high-stakes pursuit
AMERICAN CANYON, Calif., December 15, 2023 - In a collaborative effort between the American Canyon Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and Oakland Police Department, two suspects involved in vehicle theft and multiple other offenses were successfully apprehended after a high-speed pursuit spanned multiple jurisdictions.
The incident unfolded early this morning, shortly after 2:30 AM. when an observant patrol officer from the American Canyon Police Department observed two individuals casing vehicles in the parking lot of Fairfield Inn and Suites. Officers acted immediately as it became evident that the suspects were associated with a stolen Chevy truck traced back to the City of Alameda.
The pursuit, which began within the City of American Canyon, escalated onto Hwy 80, with the suspects making desperate attempts to evade law enforcement. During the course of the chase, the suspects threw numerous construction tools from the windows of the truck in an apparent effort to deter pursuing officers. The California Highway Patrol joined the effort and attempted to deploy spike strips to disable the stolen truck, ensuring the safety of the public and law enforcement personnel involved.
Ultimately, the pursuit came to a resolution in the City of Oakland, where the suspects sought refuge, barricading in the backyard of a residence. Oakland Police Department SWAT Officers provided invaluable assistance, leading to the successful apprehension of both individuals.
The suspects were identified as twenty-eight-year-old Josue Valdez Amezcua and twenty-four-year-old Hector Garcia Hernandez, both of Oakland. Upon investigation, the suspects were found to be in possession of a stolen vehicle, stolen property, and a 9mm handgun stolen out of Sacramento. Their charges include fleeing with reckless disregard for public safety, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Both suspects were promptly transported back to Napa County for booking on the aforementioned charges. The American Canyon Police Department commends the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved in bringing this pursuit to a safe and successful resolution and remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. No injuries occurred, and no shots were fired during this incident.
