Female Arrested After Stealing $17,000 Worth of Sunglasses

AMERICAN CANYON, Calif., March 22, 2023 - On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, shortly after 1:00 PM, a female, later identified as 21-year-old Melia Hughes, from Pittsburg, CA, went into the Sunglass Hut in Napa Outlets and stole approximately 40 sunglasses. The sunglasses had a combined value of over $17,000. Hughes was reported leaving the store driving a grey Infiniti. American Canyon Police Officers spotted her vehicle a short time later driving south on Highway 29 and attempted to make at traffic stop on Hughes.

Hughes pulled her car over at Highway 29 and Green Island Road and started to follow officers’ commands during the traffic stop, but then suddenly chose to take off from officers when they were outside of their cars giving her commands. Hughes’ vehicle struck a guard rail and an uninvolved motorist when driving away. Hughes did not get very far due to the damage to the wheel on her car, so she jumped out of her car near Napa Junction Road and Highway 29 to try to get away. Hughes was caught by American Canyon Police when running away and was detained. The stolen sunglasses were recovered by police in her car. Hughes was arrested for evading a police officer, grand theft, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and for her felony warrant from Contra Costa County for larceny. No injuries were sustained during the incident.
