 June 17, 2021
Today, our Federal government declared June 19, Juneteenth National Independence Day, a national holiday. In observance of this holiday, our city offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021, to allow for our residents and city employees to reflect on this important day. Offices will reopen on Monday, June 21, 2021.
Through a Proclamation read earlier this week, the City Council designated, Saturday, June 19, 2021, as "Juneteenth National Independence Day," to recognize the historical significance of Celebrating African American liberation and take the time to reflect on the meaning of this day and the history and legacy of slavery in the United States. The City of American Canyon supports the continued nationwide celebration of Juneteenth National Independence Day to provide an opportunity for residents of American Canyon to learn more about the past and to better understand the experiences that have shaped our Nation.
The City encourages everyone to reflect on ways to work together with a commitment to becoming more sensitive to one another's conditions and experiences, make significant and lasting improvements in our society based upon mutual respect, understanding, free from discrimination, and overcoming all obstacles in our path, together.
