February 2021
As the school’s Spring semester moves towards more in-person instruction, it is encouraging to see more kids out and about, walking or biking to school or simply on their bike for some time outside. We haven’t returned to what we knew as normal in 2019, but any move towards normalcy is welcome! While we like to see these kids out enjoying the fresh air and away from being glued to electronic devices, we are concerned that bicycle helmets are being used infrequently. Every cyclist should be wearing a properly fitted bike helmet, and parents need to ensure their children are using them. Bike helmets range from about $15 to $70. Even the cheapest helmets can save lives and prevent major injuries in the event of a fall or collision. Check out the resources below on bike helmets and their benefits.

Cyclists Who Suffer Serious Head Injuries Aren't Wearing Helmets
Wearing a helmet is easy for parents to enforce when out for a bike ride with their child. However, when kids are away from mom and dad and with their peer-aged friends, the use of bike helmets becomes un-cool. Please help keeps our younger riders safe by:
- As a motorist, drive cautiously with the knowledge that more kids are out and about.
- As a parent, have a conversation with your child about using bike helmets, proper/safe riding habits, etc.
Our officers will be doing more education stops and warnings to kids riding without helmets. Still, the best enforcement mechanism is a parent's voice. Please help us keep the kids injury-free and healthy. ACPD has a limited supply of helmets for families unable to afford their own. While they may not be the coolest helmet on the market, they are a cool price for parents who can't afford one….free.

I want to take a minute to mention the recent horrific and violent crime across the border at the Dollar Plus store in the Rancho Square shopping center. In California, local law enforcement officers have jurisdiction statewide. The Rancho Square shopping center is in the city limits of Vallejo, our neighbor. As such, Vallejo Police Department responds to and investigates crimes in that area. Even though our officers have statewide jurisdiction, American Canyon Police provides police services within our city. However, our officers can and will respond to mutual aid requests, be it just across the border or anywhere else in the state. Also, we sometimes observe criminal or suspicious behavior at the city border area and act on it in our efforts to keep our residents safe. We do not turn a blind eye based on jurisdictional lines' exact geography.
We responded to a mutual aid request from Vallejo Police last Tuesday night. We immediately responded to ensure it was safe for paramedics to respond and render immediate aid to the shooting victim or victims. We will always respond to these types of requests, be they from Vallejo, Napa, or anyone else in harm's way. Our thoughts now focus on the victim as we pray for a speedy recovery and strength for this family. Many of our residents shop at Rancho Square, so if you have any information, witnessed anything, or saw anything, please contact Vallejo Police Detective Caitham at (707) 648-4342 or Detective Murphy at (707) 649-5430.

Like many of you, we miss the opportunities that community gatherings offered us through events, parades, and citywide gatherings. We hope for more normal days ahead, which will likely translate to more vehicle traffic, pedestrians, and more bicyclists. Still, it doesn’t have to equal more collisions. Let’s remember to slow down, come to complete stops at stop signs/lights, and keep moving our community towards normalcy. Until then, please know that we are still here, still patrolling, and still doing our part to keep our community safe. As always, if you see something suspicious but you don’t feel it rises to the level of 9-1-1, you can always call us on the non-emergency line at (707) 253-4451.
Watchfully,
Oscar Ortiz Police Chief
