Message from the Chief
It is hard to believe it is already October and Halloween is right around the corner. At ACPD, we want to remind everyone that it will start to get dark earlier, so please remember to wear reflective clothing when out for a walk.
Ensure your bicycles have proper reflectors and lighting equipment and drive carefully. As a reminder, bicycles must have a forward-facing headlamp that emits a white light visible from 300 feet in front and to the sides. Additionally, the bike must have a rear-facing red reflector or flashing red light, visible from a distance of 500 feet, and yellow reflectors on each pedal, shoe, or ankle visible from 200 feet. Juveniles are required to wear a bike helmet, but in reality, everyone riding a bike should wear a helmet. As it gets dark earlier in the evening, we should be driving carefully and looking out for pedestrians and bicyclists who may be out for an evening walk or bike ride. Our traffic division will be doing some evening enforcement operations in the coming weeks.
This year, Halloween will look a little different. Still, our outstanding Parks and Recreation staff is putting together our very first community Trick or Treat Drive-Thru, which takes into account our current pandemic concerns. We hope everyone can find fun and safe ways to enjoy Halloween this year. A collection of the guidance and tips is available here.
October is also Fire Safety Month. While American Canyon is not situated in a high wildland fire area, this year’s fire season impacts are felt locally. Our partners at the American Canyon Fire Prevention District responded and spent several weeks assisting up-valley at the Glass Fire. Our officers spent most of what would have been their days off working in the fire evacuation areas and helping with new evacuations as that fire grew (see photos below). Tomorrow, October 16th, at 9 AM, we will host a Virtual “Coffee with the Chiefs” via Facebook Live, I will be joined by our Interim Fire Chief, Mike Cahill. Chief Cahill and I will be talking about Emergency Preparedness. We will also have a special guest to conduct a brief online disaster preparedness training. I hope you will join us. The event will be recorded and available to watch later. I will share the link in my next update, in case you can't make it.
I also want to acknowledge the recent retirement of Officer Geoff Rochester. As most of you know, American Canyon Police Officers are members of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office. Officer/Deputy Rochester is one of those officers who chose to spend most of his career assigned here in the City of American Canyon. He spent several years as the Middle School, School Resource Officer, and our Community Resource (Neighborhood Watch) Officer. We wish him well in his next chapter, and we appreciate that the City Council recognized him for his years of service in our community.
Sincerely,
Oscar Ortiz Police Chief

Virtual Coffee with the Cops Recording Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for our first Virtual Coffee with the Cops last month. The recording is available here for anyone who wasn't able to attend. The session included great questions from community members, neighborhood watch tips, and updates from Chief Ortiz, the Napa County District Attorney, Mayor Garcia, and Community Resource Officer Jeff Scott.

Have YOU Signed up for Lobo's Camera Registry? Our residential and business security camera database assists the American Canyon Police Department with investigations. Register your exterior cameras and if something happens in the area, an officer will contact you to see if your camera(s) contain any video that may be helpful in their investigation. |
