Hello,
American Canyon is the most diverse community in Napa County, with over 38 languages spoken at home and all of the world's major religions represented. The demographics of our City Council represent the diverse make-up of our community – a majority of which are "people of color."
The City Council enacts a budget each year that funds desired services reflecting our community's core values. Paramount among those values is ensuring the public's safety. The American Canyon Police Department's services are provided to the City through an agreement with the Napa County Sheriff’s Office. This means that your American Canyon Police Officers are deputies of the Napa County Sheriff's Office. The community profoundly appreciates the personnel who staff the American Canyon Police Department because, as a part of the Sheriff’s Office, they are dedicated, highly trained, and have demonstrated the utmost integrity for decades.
The tragic killing of George Floyd at the hands of former Minneapolis officer, now inmate, Derek Chauvin, and the inaction of the other, now also former officers, has left us all with a storm of emotions including anger, frustration, sadness, and despair. Law enforcement leaders and police unions alike have spoken against Chauvin's actions and the inaction of the other officers who were with him. Concerns about "use of force" practices and policies within law enforcement agencies and requests to "de-fund" public safety have increased nationwide.
The City is committed to providing ALL of our residents with a high level of police service. The relationship, trust, and partnership between our community and our Police Department has been for years, something extraordinary and cherished by many. It's important for our community to know that the Napa County Sheriff's Office (who staffs the American Canyon Police Department) already leads the way with their training and policies, none of which includes the actions (and inaction) seen on the May 25th video from Minneapolis.
I hope that you will all tune in to the City Council meeting on Tuesday evening to hear from law enforcement representatives about how our local law enforcement officers are trained and the standards they are committed to meeting. Information about how to watch and participate in the meeting is included below.
Sincerely,
Jason Holley City Manager
P.S. Details for our 4th of July Virtual Celebration are coming soon, stay tuned!

Barking Dogs A dog left out to bark all day and night isn't pleasant for the neighborhood or your four-legged family member. Please be courteous to your neighbors and not allow your dog to stay outside and bark all day or night. As a friendly reminder, the City's Municipal Code ensures the peace and comfort of residents by providing penalties to owners of dogs that cause a nuisance to neighbors by habitually barking, howling, or yelping.
Most of the time, dog owners don't realize there is a problem. If you experience frustrations due to a dog that habitually barks, howls, or yelps in your neighborhood, please try first to let your neighbor know of the problem by leaving a note or talking to them (at a distance and with a face covering, of course!). If that doesn't help, contact non-emergency dispatch (707) 253-4451 to report the problem.
