Message from the Chief
Happy New Year to all!
As we close the book on 2019, we take an opportunity to identify crime trends, training needs, and set goals for our crime-fighting mission in 2020. We will need your help!
Statewide, and here in our city, property crime continues to rise. 2019 saw our neighborhoods get hit with several vehicle burglary rashes during several occasions throughout the year. We can sympathize with the frustration of going to your car to drive to work in the morning, only to find one of your windows smashed and your vehicle rummaged through. We want to remind everyone first: Do not leave bags or items inside your car that would invite thieves, and: If you see suspicious vehicles or people in your neighborhood, call us. We did apprehend a couple of vehicle burglars in 2019, but we always welcome tips (report them to 707-253-4451) from our residents to help put more eyes and ears out in the community.
For any crime that may come through a neighborhood, we look to find nearby properties with surveillance cameras and ask them to check their footage to see if it will help our investigation. Over 60 residences have already registered their homes with our Neighborhood Watch Camera Registry, which gives us a quick database to check and a phone number/email to contact if we need someone to check their footage for us. If you haven’t already joined our registry, click the image below.

Despite statewide crime upticks, we are committed to continuing to provide you the highest level of service. American Canyon is still a safe community, and the men and women of the police department are committed to keeping it that way. On November 5th, our City Council passed a Resolution in support of an upcoming ballot initiative that aims to restore consequences to crimes such as vehicle burglary and retail theft, along with language to keep violent criminals and certain sex offenders from early release eligibility. The Keep California Safe Initiative will be on the ballot this fall. We hope you will review the staff report and Resolution and join us in supporting this initiative.
2019 also brought us a great 4th of July, National Night Out, and opportunities to meet more residents, smile, and build on your trust. Our officers appreciate the friendly greetings they frequently get from our community and the partnership we enjoy with everyone in the city. As a contract city for the Napa Sheriff’s Office, you can learn more about our law enforcement resources and training by participating in the Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy. Applications are available here. Sign up and check us out! There is no cost.
