Neighborhood Watch Update

NW

Message from Chief Ortiz
It’s hard to believe that it's already November and the Holiday Season is fast approaching. We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that vehicle break-ins and property crimes, in general, are on the rise in California. Please do not leave bags or anything that even look like an item of value in your car, visible to would-be thieves. Duffel bags, camera bags, shopping bags, and even boxes are attractive targets to serial thieves who will quickly smash glass windows and take items, hoping to find valuable items.

The growing trend of repeat offender thieves is just one of the reasons that I brought forth a resolution to our City Council, asking them to support the “Keep Californians Safe Act.” The City Council approved the resolution and in doing so, joined a host of other cities and organizations in formally supporting this initiative, which will be on your Fall 2020 ballot, to correct some of the unintended consequences caused by several recent criminal justice reforms which removed consequences for most thefts and drug crimes. While the resolution will not undo the reforms, it will look to add some accountability and consequences to burglars and thieves, shifting away from the current “catch and release” practices that the reforms put in place. I want to thank the City Council for passing this resolution and thank the residents who have shown support for the resolution on our Facebook page. Random Acts of Vandalism
Today, we learned that our several vehicles in our community were once again the targets of random acts of vandalism, mostly in the west side of town. In addition to shot out windows, several vehicles were also spray painted and damaged. The areas hit include Kingsly Lane, Marla Drive, Wetlands Edge, Rio Grande Drive, Flamingo Court, Los Altos, Chaucer Lane, Donaldson Way, and Ventana Drive. Once again, we are asking for the communities help. If you live near these areas and have a home video surveillance system that captures sidewalk or street footage, please review your video for any suspicious vehicles or people during the late night hours of Tuesday, November 11th and the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 13th. If you have any footage, contact our officers by calling (707) 253-4451. If you haven’t already added your camera to our camera registry database, click here to do so now.

We want to find these vandals, but we will need your help. Together, we are partners. Together, we keep our community safe.

Speaking of property crimes…
In 2018, we had over 20 vehicles vandalized throughout American Canyon with BB gun shots overnight.  With the help of home video surveillance, we were able to identify a suspect vehicle. Using that information, detectives were able to develop a suspect, and eventually make an arrest. The suspect has only recently been convicted and the case is scheduled for sentencing later in December.
