In A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Becky Chambers imagines a post-apocalyptic world where robots left human society after gaining self-awareness, but with a promise to return to check on humanity in the future. Generations pass and Sibling Dex, a monk who offers tea and a sympathetic ear to communities across the land of Panga, stumbles upon a robot named Mosscap that has come to fulfill his predecessors' promise. Its question for humanity is deceptively simple: What do humans need? The unlikely pair travels the countryside only to discover that the people they encounter all have different answers for them. This is a hopeful and inviting story that examines human nature and purpose in all of its beautiful complexity. Recommended for fans of Becky Chambers, Nghi Vo, and TJ Klune.
