It is an honor to represent you and the communities of Hayward, Union City, Newark, and portions of Fremont and Sunol on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. August is the month that many local governments traditionally are on recess. While the Board of Supervisors did not hold any official Board meetings this month, our office has been hard at work for District Two!
Earlier this month, we held a town hall panel discussion on the State of Health Care in Alameda County. This was a productive meeting in which the discussion included information on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the future of health care services in Alameda County, and also the current state of St. Rose Hospital. St. Rose is a critical community benefit hospital for central and south Alameda County residents and our office is committed to keeping its doors open.
In addition to the regular Board of Supervisors business, other projects and initiatives our office is working on include a Habitat Restoration Project in the Union City hills, engagement with the Sunol Citizens Advisory Council, hosting the Science in the Park event, creating a Niles Canyon Multi-Use Trail, and implementing the Tennyson Corridor Service Initiative.  At the last Sunol
Citizens Advisory Council meeting, attendees raised concerns that the polling
place in Sunol was not going to be open for the general election this
November. Additionally, all registered
voters in Sunol had been automatically, without consent, transferred to a vote
by mail ballot.
Our office is
happy to report that after citizens raised these concerns with the Registrar of
Voters (ROV), that the ROV has been able to work with the staff at Sunol Glen
Elementary School to open a polling location for voters.
Sunolians will be
able to continue their Election Day traditions of gathering and voting at the
polls together at 11601 Main Street in Sunol on November 6.

Join the League of Women Voters to learn everything you ever wanted to know about the upcoming state ballot measures.
The pros and cons of each of the ten state ballot measures will be presented at a luncheon forum on Friday, September 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be held at the San Lorenzo Village Homes Association Hall at 377 Paseo Grande in San Lorenzo.
The Forum is designed to provide information from opponents and advocates of each ballot measure. Handout materials will also be available and will include a list of resource websites for further information.
Experts on the controversial Propositions 30 and 38, which asks voters to approve increasing the sales tax and/or state income tax, have been invited to speak.
Luncheon cost is $10 if paid in advance or $15 at the door. The public may attend without cost for the program alone. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 11:45 a.m. and the program begining at 12:15 p.m.
The luncheon forum is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Eden Area and the American Association of University Women Hayward-Castro Valley Branch.

As reported in the Newark Patch, the county-funded Highway to Work youth employment program is looking for local Tri-Cities businesses to help train at-risk teens and young adults — at no financial cost to employers. The program has more than 50 local youth ready to work but not enough businesses to host them.
To be eligible, businesses must provide a safe environment and offer meaningful and worthwhile work experience for up to 30 hours in the summer and 10 hours year-round for youth ages 15 to 21.

Ombudsmen advocate for the dignity, quality of life, and quality of care for
residents of Long-Term Care Facilities throughout Alameda County. Ombudsmen ensure that the residents’ rights
are always respected and report violations to appropriate government authorities.
The
Alameda County Long Term Care Ombudsman program is holding a volunteer training
class between September 18 – October 5, 2012.
These classes provide an opportunity for volunteers to join the
Ombudsman program, receive training, and become certified through the State of
California.
If
you enjoy visiting elders, have a few hours a week to volunteer, are observant, reliable, can
hold confidences securely and are unafraid of speaking out when something is
not right, you may have what it takes to be an Ombudsman. If you are interested, there will be an
informal Ombudsman Orientation before the training on September 6, 2012 at
10:00 a.m. at 6955 Foothill Blvd, Suite 300 in Oakland.

LIFE ElderCare enables an elder
care option that satisfies what most people want – to live independently, and
with dignity, in their own home for as long as safely possible. Since 1975, thousands of people have made a
commitment to making the Tri-City area an “aging-friendly” community. Volunteers range in age from 18 to 80 and come

 Walk This Way is a 16 week program for seniors that integrates walking, flexibility, strength and balance exercises with fun games and educational topics. Seniors participating in the Walk This Way program receive a free pedometer and walking logs, obtain training on various exercises, and learn about health, nutrition, and pedestrian safety. Participants also find out about local community resources and transportation services, and get support from each other to stay motivated and achieve their individual fitness goals.
The program is FREE and open to seniors of all fitness ages 55 years and older. Sessions occur weekly at the following locations:
