March is Women’s History Month—a time to honor the incredible women who strengthen our families, workplaces, and communities! This time of year gives us an opportunity to recognize the women in our lives and women's countless contributions throughout history.
As a father of three daughters, I am deeply grateful for the women in my life. My children and my wife, Michele, inspire, guide, and bring purpose to my life every day. I’m am also fortunate to work alongside many remarkable women in my District 1 team and across Alameda County.
This month, we have proudly hosted and attended several events celebrating the leadership and achievements of women throughout Alameda County. Explore below to stay updated on a variety of upcoming events, updates, opportunities, and resources in District 1.
As always, if there is anything that my office can do to assist you regarding County-specific matters, please feel free to reach out at bosdist1@acgov.org.

We celebrated Women's History Month with a luncheon and a room filled with amazing women leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
And more than that, a room full of women who support each other, open doors for others, and help the next generation find a seat at the table.
Supervisor Elisa Márquez and Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan helped welcome our guests, and I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who joined us. We are especially grateful to Fremont Drum and Dance for their vibrant performance, and to our keynote speaker, Pam Isom, Founder and President of ICE Safety Solutions, for her powerful and inspiring remarks.
A heartfelt thank you to our event co-sponsors! Supervisor Elisa Márquez, Republic Services, Banter Bookshop, and HERS Breast Cancer Foundation.
This week, District 1 commended Dr. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua for her 20+ years of contributions to STEM education and her work advancing opportunities for women in engineering!
Dr. Ekeng-Itua currently serves as a Professor of Engineering at Ohlone College in Fremont, where she has developed and implemented a culturally responsive pedagogy in engineering education, helping to increase retention of women and other historically underrepresented students.
The District 1 team recognizes and honors Dr. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua for her documented contributions to engineering education, workforce development, research, and public service, celebrating her leadership and its invaluable impact on the community!

District 1 of Alameda County is also proud to commend and honor County Counsel Donna Ziegler for 26 years of dedicated public service!
In 2011, Ms. Ziegler was unanimously appointed by the Board of Supervisors as County Counsel, becoming the first woman and first African American to hold this position in Alameda County.
Over the past 14.5 years, Ms. Ziegler has served with distinction, making her tenure longer than any other sitting County Counsel in California. Her unwavering commitment to the highest standards of ethical conduct has elevated the practice of public service, and her contributions to the Association of County Counsel’s Litigation Oversight Committee have been significant.
In recognition of her remarkable service, the Board of Supervisors has declared Friday, March 27, 2026 to be observed as "Donna R. Ziegler Day" in Alameda County.
A sincere thank you to Ms. Ziegler, and congratulations on your retirement!
