There are currently 1,100 youth ages 0 until 21 in the Alameda County child welfare system. Alameda County CASA (ACCASA) pairs volunteers 1:1 with youth in foster care. After comprehensive, free training to become skilled advocates for children, often a CASA is the only stable and reliable adult in a child’s life. At this time ACCASA can only support 25% of those eligible.
ACCASA wants to increase the percentage of children with an advocate, with a commitment to diversifying its volunteer base to better reflect the communities served. CASAs advocate, report, research resources, mentor, and often have a lot of fun in the process of building a strong bond with their assigned youth. Please consider finding some time in your heart and schedule for a young person in foster care.

Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District finds California's first West Nile virus positive bird of the year.
If you see a dead bird, no matter where, please contact the California Dead Bird Hotline online here - California WNV Report Line. The best way to reduce the risk of West Nile virus is to prevent mosquitoes from developing in the first place. Residents can help by draining, treating, or covering any containers that hold water—or by reaching out to our district if there is standing water. Winifred "Winnie" Thompson, is a valuable leader who has made significant contributions in arts and culture in our community. As a visual artist herself who has her paintings exhibited at many local venues, she supports local artists as well. She was involved in the planning of free art demonstrations at the Adobe Art Center. Winnie has a self-published series called "My Name is America" where she shares life stories of community members. She has supported literacy and is a Learning Center instructor at the Hayward Adult School, and she is also an English tutor at the Hayward Library. She has been involved with the Diablo/Alameda branch of the National League of American Pen Women, the National Arts Credential Officer, the Hayward Literacy Plus Council, as well as a Board Member for both the Hayward Arts Council and A.R.T. in Castro Valley. Winne has been recognized for numerous awards. The Hayward City Council has recognized her with the Ruby Hearts of Hayward award, the Hearts of Hayward award, and the John N. Pappas Humanitarian Award. She has also received the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Hayward Lions Club and the Teacher of the Year Award by the Hayward Adult School. Winnie has the distinct honor of receiving the Alameda County Arts Leadership Award in 2018 for our very own District 4.
On behalf of District 4, and this is especially fitting as it is Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Winnie for her generous contribution to the arts in our community. Her support not only helps sustain creativity and expression - it inspires it. Because of Winnie's involvement, artists have a platform to showcase their work, there is more access to art education, and there are more efforts to advance literacy. Winnie's belief in the power of the arts uplifts us all and reminds us of how vital creativity is to the soul of a community. Thank you, Winnie, for investing in that spirit and helping it thrive.
