 In a powerful unanimous vote, our Board of Supervisors approved $3.5 million dollars toward Immigrant & Refugee resources and services at last Tuesday’s meeting! Dignity and justice have no bounds and in these unprecedented times, our County is standing in solidarity and Acting Together for All.
With this vote, we have advanced:
- $1.3 million to increase the capacity of the Public Defender’s Immigration Unit which provides critical deportation defense and legal representation to immigrant clients facing imminent removal or likely to face imminent removal from the United States.
- $2.2 million toward critical services including:
- $700,000 for ACILEP to provide the Rapid Response Hotline, Know Your Rights Trainings, pre-emptive legal services and community volunteer network response coordination;
- $500,000 for Trabajadores Unidos Workers United toward the critical work of coalition building for resourcing and preparing communities, including trainings, mutual aid, and neighborhood resources for immigrant and refugee communities; and
- $1,000,000 for California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice to provide due process legal services in the community, including attorneys, staff support and expenses.
We know our community is stronger, safer, and healthier when we are all informed, prepared, and have our constitutional rights to due process protected and upheld. Thank you to all my Board of Supervisors colleagues for your unanimous support. I am grateful to chair our ACT for All committee to advance this important work with vice chair Supervisor Elisa Márquez.
I also want to appreciate everyone who has given public comment over many meetings to share your stories and to our community partners doing critical work on the ground. Our partnership will uphold a vision of a welcoming Alameda County that prioritizes inclusion, equity, and opportunity for all residents.
