Dear District 3 Community,
Happy Women’s History Month! It is an honor to continue to carry on the legacy of so many women predecessors who served before me at the local, state, and federal levels, including the late Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan and former Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker. I am proud to continue serving alongside many women who currently hold positions at various government levels. Let’s look forward with hope and determination for future women leaders to carry on this vital legacy of progress and equality. As our office continues its extraordinary work, I am happy to share our progress and highlights of the County’s initiatives, community events, resources, and opportunities through my newsletter.

I am pleased to report that my office is working with the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women on drafting a County Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) ordinance to affirm our commitment to eliminating all forms of discrimination against women—a movement which former Alameda County District 3 Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker initiated in 2010.
Your input and engagement remain crucial to our ongoing efforts. Should you have any comments, questions, or concerns related to District 3 or Alameda County, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at bos.district3@acgov.org. Your feedback is invaluable, and we are here to assist and support you.
Sincerely,
Lena Tam Alameda County Supervisor, Third District
The County of Alameda Board of Supervisors proclaimed March 2024 as Women's History Month to celebrate the incredible contributions of women throughout history, shaping our nation's growth and resilience. From pioneering charitable initiatives to driving economic and cultural progress, women have been instrumental every step of the way. Here's to recognizing their invaluable impact on our communities and beyond!
The Toishan-Oakland Chinatown Patrol Team celebrated more than 1,100 days of service. During Women's History Month, we honored their remarkable female members, comprising 80% of the team, who tirelessly organize, patrol, and protect our Oakland Chinatown small businesses and community.
This week, Supervisor Tam and Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft co-hosted a meeting at the Alameda Free Library to address the affordable housing crisis in the county. Alameda County Housing Director Michelle Starratt elaborated on the pressing need for increased affordable housing throughout the region, particularly for middle and low-income residents, and discussed how a bond measure could significantly bolster the housing supply.
Born This Way Foundation President Cynthia Germanotta and Senator Laphonza Butler led a panel discussion with mental health experts and young advocates. They are exploring youth mental health in California and beyond, focusing on impactful solutions from the perspectives of young people.
After this empowering event, District 3 and the Born This Way Foundation teamed up with the goal of building a kinder and braver Alameda County by connecting the community with free mental health resources like the Be There Certificate, a free online mental health course for all! – Read More & Take the Course Here

Survey Due: Sunday, March 31, 2024
Mid-life and older LGBTQIA+ Californians are part of a generation that faced extreme levels of stigma during their lifetimes as well as pride in a movement that asserted civil rights for LGBTQIA+ people of all ages. Despite the central role that LGBTQIA+ Californians play in California’s history and in communities across the state, no baseline data are available that describe their aging experiences. Some studies, such as a COVID-19 study of LGBTQIA+ older adults in San Francisco, suggest higher rates of isolation, depression and suicide ideation, all of which could be addressed with more responsive and accessible services. As CDA and others seek to learn more about the aging experience of all Californians in support of the California Master Plan on Aging (MPA) goals for equity and inclusion, it is crucial that the unique life experiences within LGBTQIA+ communities are visible and honored.
California’s survey of mid-life and older LGBTQIA+ residents will paint an up-to-date and comprehensive statewide portrait. To offer insights about the experiences of marginalized and underserved LGBTQIA+ communities, the survey team will oversample Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), Hispanic/Latinx, and Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities, as well as rural and frontier communities. The survey data will form a first-ever baseline data set, which will be available to other researchers in an open-source format to encourage additional research and policy attention to the needs of mid-life and older LGBTQIA+ Californians.
