Welcome
Welcome to the holiday season. It seems as soon as we turn the corner into November, the season begins. In this season of thanksgiving, I am ever grateful for my team, my life and the love of family and friends. I know that the holiday season is not always a happy time for everyone, but I know that each one of us has the capacity to make the world a little brighter for someone else. I invite you to use that gift as much as you can during this holiday season and surely, you will receive many blessings in return. Happy Holidays!

Justice Avenger: Tara Anderson
What does it mean to be a “Justice Avenger"?
For Tara Anderson, data can tell a powerful story of the disparities and inefficiencies that demand attention and action. But it’s the stories behind the statistics that fuel her passion for a more equitable and service oriented justice system.
Tara joined the Alameda County District Attorney’s office in February 2023 and serves as the Assistant Chief of Administration and Operations.
Tara led the team whose proposal to combat Organized Retail Theft was recently awarded a two million dollar grant from the state. The grant enables ACDAO to fund a new three-person prosecution unit dedicated to complex data analysis, investigation and vertical prosecution.
Tara has dedicated her career to improving the lives of individuals affected by the justice system. As the DAO’s Assistant Chief of Administration and Operations Tara advances innovation, research and operational policy on behalf of the District Attorney’s Office. To meet these goals she sets strategic priorities under the direction of DA Price and in collaboration with senior staff.
Prior to joining Alameda County, Tara served the City and County of San Francisco for over 12 years. She was a member of the leadership team at the S.F. District Attorney’s Office where she wrote and successfully advocated for change in state law and local policy to improve victim services, address sexual exploitation, advance smart sentencing reform, increase tools for public accountability and data transparency. In this role Tara advanced the first public prosecution data dashboard in the state of California. In addition, Tara managed extensive portfolios of federal, state and local grants, having secured over $20 million dollars in grants.
Tara earned her B.S. in Criminal Justice with a minor in International Politics from Northeastern University, her M.P.P. from the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and was a distinguished Hansard Scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She was a Division I Collegiate Soccer Player and hopes to play ‘the beautiful game’ as long as her mom, who still plays today.

The Good Work We Do
District Attorney Pamela Price Hosts 21st Annual Day of Remembrance at the Family Justice Center
On October 27, 2023, DA Price hosted the 21rst Annual Day of Remembrance at the Family Justice Center in Oakland. On this day we remember the victims who have been murdered resulting from domestic violence and strive to empower women, children, and men who have survived physical, emotional and mental abuse often-times by someone they once loved.
"I am also a survivor of domestic violence," says DA Price. "My office is committed to seeking justice on behalf of victims." The Day of Remembrance includes the reading of names of victims killed in domestic violence in Alameda County since 1996. It also serves to recognize all the agencies, County departments, commissions, community-based organizations, and individuals whose work is essential in the ongoing effort to eliminate domestic violence in Alameda County.

Consumer Justice At Work
The investigation into last August’s scrap metal yard fire at the Schnitzer Steel recycling facility continues. Currently, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office (ACDAO) is collecting evidence from nearly a dozen residents of Oakland and Alameda who report having had adverse health impacts because of the smoke from the August 9-10 fire.
The fire, which lasted more than 24 hours, sent out vast clouds of smoke, impacting the air quality of Oakland, San Leandro, Fremont, and Alameda. On August 17, 2023, the ACDAO sent out a social media message asking community members to contact our office if they possess evidence or leads regarding the fire or whose health was negatively impacted by the smoke.
Schnitzer Steel dba Radius Recycling facility sits on about 33.2 acres of land adjacent to the Oakland Inner Harbor waterfront and the Port of Oakland and was the location for fire incidents in 2009, 2010, and 2018.
