Earlier this month, in partnership with numerous organizations, my office hosted a Veterans Stand Down Event that was an enormous success. Countless veterans attended and received essential resources such as dental assistance, haircuts, food, and child support services. Beyond these necessities, veterans also found a service of immeasurable value - a sense of emotional support and a deep connection with their community.
Veterans personify our nation’s essence, forever resilient and persevering. Their sacrifices enable us to fulfill our dreams and aspirations, and their heroic actions are unforgettable. Organizing events like the Stand Down allows us to manifest our appreciation for veterans while honoring their vital contributions. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to every individual and organization who made this event possible:
In coordination with my colleague, District 2 Supervisor Elisa Marquez, local law enforcement, government agencies, businesses, and others, Districts 1 & 2 hosted the biennial Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll event last weekend. Citizens enjoyed physical activity, splendid weather, food, and the company of their fellow Alameda County residents. I had the opportunity to interact with many attendees and constituents, and I deeply appreciate your valuable insights about local issues and solutions.
This event, created by former Supervisor Scott Haggerty and the late Supervisor Richard Valle, was designed to increase accessibility to Niles Canyon for Alameda County residents. I am honored to continue their legacy alongside Supervisor Elisa Marquez by organizing this fantastic event.
While strolling through Sunol, I was reminded of the expansive, beautiful landscapes that reside within District 1's boundaries. More importantly, I admired the diversity and camaraderie that makes our community flourish.
You can help keep our environment safe from hazardous materials by attending StopWaste's drop-off event on October 15th at the Oakland Arena! Everyday objects like cleaning chemicals, batteries, paint, and electronics are used by many. This drop-off event provides an efficient method to dispose of these materials responsibly and safely. Ensuring that our neighborhoods and natural surroundings remain healthy is imperative, and I hope you will support this mission. Pre-registration is required. A county-wide proposal approved by the Board of Supervisors, the Foreclosure Prevention Program (FPP) aims to alleviate housing insecurity for Alameda County residents. This project was spearheaded by the AC Housing and Community Development Department (ACHCD) along with A-1 Community Housing Services, and recipients are eligible to obtain a recoverable grant of $75,000 that exclusively applies to an existing property loan. Applications will be accepted from October 2nd to November 6th, 2023.
I firmly believe that working-class residents experiencing financial challenges should have unbridled access to government resources. This program offers critical support that will assist families faced with foreclosure and prevent them from losing their homes. I commend organizations like the ACHCD and the A-1 Community Housing Services that strive to provide such resources, as the FPP forwards a unique opportunity to prevent foreclosure for many.

A vital program, the Alameda County Behavioral Healthcare Services Department (ACBHS) is engaging in a collaborative effort to update their procedures under the California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal program (CalAIM). By incorporating new policies through CalAIM that simplify payment methods and make department processes more transparent, ACBHS can provide targeted healthcare services to individuals insured by Medi-Cal. Over 500,000 Alameda County residents receive insurance through Medi-Cal. These updates will be transformative and the ACBHS's commitment to serving those with specialized needs is commendable. Sarbhjot Malhi recently joined Supervisor Haubert’s staff as an assistant and is incredibly passionate about local government and public service. A recent Political Science graduate from UC Berkeley, he served as Vice President of Administration on student government at his community college and represented students on a district-wide level in various committees. In addition, he loves reading and hiking. He looks forward to developing governmental experience through District 1, and, above all, looks forward to serving Supervisor Haubert’s constituency.
