Autumn weather has arrived and with it, our day light hours are becoming shorter. Take extra precaution with whatever mode of transportation you are using to look out for others and avoid accidents. Halloween is one-week away and little ghouls and goblins will be visiting our doors to Trick-or-Treat. Visit the National Safety Council for safety tips whether you’re in costume, accompanying Trick-or-Treaters, or a motorist.
In 2020 the biennial Science in the Park had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming back after a four-year hiatus, this year’s event had to be bigger than ever! And it was!
 Partnering with our host Cal State East Bay and moving the event to their campus made for a spectacular location and connection to higher education. The many thousands of kids and families were treated to over 100 exhibit spaces with STEAM related activities and information. Every one of our exhibitors has my thanks for their participation. A special thanks to the 501st Legion who brought Darth Vader and a contingent of Strom Troopers out; as well as our keynote speaker and high school student Samaira Metha who invented CoderBunnyz and tested her game out with kids at Science in the Park in 2014. We hope to return to CSUEB for Science in the Park 2024!
We are also approaching the one-year anniversary of the tragic loss of Supervisor Wilma Chan. Last week our Board voted to rename a street in the heart of San Lorenzo, next to a development Wilma kept on track, to Via Wilma Chan. Wilma was a champion for the underserved and her legacy will have a lasting impact across our county. Further below, you can find information about the renaming of an Oakland park in honor of and to celebrate Wilma.

 Raising Leaders has been a key District 2 initiative since 2018. Raising Leaders is a workshop and internship model created by the Hayward Adult School to give at-promise youth an opportunity to hear and learn from leaders within our community and gain hands-on paid work experience. Students attend an 8-week workshop at sites all across Alameda County. Students can expand their work experience with an 8-week internship following the workshop series.
Since our partnership, Raising Leaders has expanded to help at-promise youth ages 14 - 21, with hundreds of students graduating from the program and many receiving employment across different Alameda County departments after their internships. This is Raising Leaders' second year bringing workshops inside Juvenile Hall in all six units.
Raising Leaders will be starting their 17th cohort on November 2, 2022. There are 340 students who've filled out referral forms and enrollment is still open.
We are proud to be a fiscal sponsor for Raising Leaders and will continue to highlight and share the successes of this phenomenal program and our local youth in future editions of District 2 newsletters.

Today is the last day register to vote in the November 8th Election. If you've already registered, double-check to ensure that your information is up-to-date. If you moved, changed your name, or want to change your political party preference, you'll need to re-register.

At www.acvote.ballottrax.net, Alameda County registered voters can sign-up to receive automatic email or text notifications when the county elections office mails the voter’s ballot, when the county has received and counted the voter’s ballot, and if there are any issues with the voter’s ballot that need to be resolved before it can be formally counted and tallied.
There are three options for returning completed vote-by-mail ballots: by U.S. mail postmarked by Election Day, at a vote-by-mail Ballot Drop Box, or at an accessible in-person Vote Center voting location.

Community Celebration Renaming Madison Park to Wilma Chan Park

The event is outdoors, free, and open to the public.
In addition to honoring Supervisor Chan, this ribbon cutting event will debut significant park improvements such as new signage, lighting, and playground upgrades, and celebrate with cultural performances from community partners.
 Hayward small businesses and sole proprietorships with 25 or fewer employees may be eligible for $5,000 and $10,000 Alameda County Small Business Recovery grants.
Applicants can receive a one-time grant of $5,000 for home-based businesses or a $10,000 for brink-and-mortar businesses, provided they have not previously received COVID-19-related ARPA funding directly from the County of Alameda.
The application period is open until Monday, Oct. 31. Funds are limited and not everyone who applies is guaranteed to receive funding. If the total funding requests for all grant applications exceeds available program funding levels totaling $11 million, grants will be awarded by lottery.

Senior Meals are available Monday – Friday from 12:00-12:30pm. These delicious, nutritious meals are served hot and ready to take home to eat. Each meal is low sodium and contains at least 1/3 of seniors Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) including fruits and vegetables high in Vitamins C and A. Check out the monthly menu here.
An annual registration is required along with an advanced reservation at the distribution site. For each meal, a $3.75 contribution is suggested, but no eligible senior (age 60+) will be turned away for lack of funds.

211 Alameda County is excited to announce the launch of our new Housing Community Resource Specialist (HCRS) phone line! The HCRS program is a one-year pilot program generously funded by Health Leads that aims to provide additional support for advanced housing-related needs from 211 callers. These needs could include preventing eviction, resolving tenant-landlord disputes, unsafe living conditions, or callers facing harassment or discrimination.
The HCRS line is available Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you or someone you know needs help navigating housing issues, please dial 2-1-1 to be connected to the HCRS team.
