About the Speaker

Nicole Clark, Litigation Attorney & CEO of Trellis Research

Nicole Clark is a business litigation and labor and employment attorney who has handled litigation in both state and federal courts. She’s worked at a variety of law firms ranging from mid-size litigation boutiques to large firms, and is licensed to practice law in three states. She has defended corporations and employers in complex class action and wage and hour disputes, as well as individual employment matters ranging from sexual harassment to wrongful termination.

Additionally, Nicole is the CEO and co-founder of Trellis Research, a legal analytics platform that uses AI and machine learning to provide litigators with strategic legal intelligence and judicial analytics. Nicole has an intuitive understanding of technology and is deeply committed to helping lawyers leverage technology to gain a competitive advantage and achieve a more favorable outcome for their clients.

Program Description

The U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) enforces Title 1 of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) which governs employer-sponsored health and retirement plans. EBSA assists employers and the regulated community in understanding and complying with federal group health plan laws. This program will provide an overview of recent updates to health benefit laws under Part 7 of ERISA, including the Affordable Care Act and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. New mandates and patient protections related to emergency services and COVID-19 response will also be discussed.

About the Speaker

Cristina Collazo has been a Senior Benefits Advisor at the United States Department of Labor, Employee Benefit Security Administration (EBSA) since 2009. Cristina assists participants and plan officials on a wide range of health and retirement plan issues. Before joining EBSA, Cristina worked in a variety of public and private sector employment. Cristina is a member of the California bar and holds a B.A. from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, and a J.D. from the University of San Francisco, School of Law.

Trellis is now available on the Alameda County Law Library public computers and through the Library's WiFi.  It is also available remotely for current ACLL patron account holders.  ACLL patrons should email lawlib@acgov.org to request the required Trellis password.

Trellis lets you search for and gain access to extensive California state trial court (including Alameda County) documents and data.  A researcher can access rulings, dockets, documents, verdicts, judge bios, and motion and issue explanations.

Use Trellis for -

  •  a brief bank, to search and retrieve various types of court filings such as complaints and motions for use as templates and examples.
  • analytics to discover how judges, parties, and opposing counsel have handled similar cases.
