An Update from Health Care Services: As of November 5, 2020
Earlier this week we strengthened a health officer order requiring all health care workers (HCWs) in licensed facilities to be vaccinated for influenza. We also issued a health alert to Alameda County providers. Health care facilities must implement a process for requiring HCW to receive vaccination unless an HCW can produce sufficient documentation to obtain a medical exemption. Getting the the flu vaccine reduces illness and transmission in our community, reduces clinic visits and hospitalization, and prevents illnesses that mimic COVID-19. We are updating our recommendations for long term care facilities for responding to cases of flu in the context of preventing COVID transmission. To date, there are no known cases of flu and COVID co-infection in Alameda County and we believe this is best preserved by preventive actions like wearing face masks, social distancing, frequent handwashing, and avoiding gatherings.
While Alameda County remains in the Orange (Moderate) Tier on the State's color-coded Blueprint for a Safer Economy, our reopening activities are largely restricted to the Red Tier. We are observing a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases, which is somewhat expected with recent reopening and increased rates across the state. Middle and high schools may open as of November 9, if ready; and we are not not opening additional activities at this time. Moving at a slower pace helps us slow the spread of disease and avoid closures of any opened activities. We will continue to monitor trends and remain ready to pivot as needed.

Election 2020 is almost over and already there were very good and very disappointing results at the national and state level. However, and perhaps most importantly, there was record turnout of voters. The Alameda County Registrar of Voters is expecting that over 80% of registered voters made their voices heard this year! Amazing results for democracy that should make all of us stand up, no matter our position, and shout for joy! Let's continue to be patient with one another and unify behind our collective American values!
Let's also take a moment in gratitude for the many volunteers and staff who registered voters, staffed voting locations, managed drop boxes, and are currently tallying hundreds of thousands of ballots. Voting this year was a new experience and it's been seamless - no small feat!

Fairview MAC Applications Still Being Accepted!
My office is now accepting applications for appointment to the Fairview Municipal Advisory Council. Applications will be accepted through November 21, 2020.
The Council consists of 5 members and advises the Board of Supervisors on matters concerning the Fairview area, as defined within the boundaries established by the Fairview Area Specific Plan, excluding those areas that are within the boundaries of the Castro Valley General Plan. Meetings occur once a month in the evening on the first Tuesday of each month.
Appointees must live in the Fairview area or have operated/owned a business and/or property for at least 5 consecutive years. Appointees will receive a $50 stipend per meeting.

Most Tuesdays, the Board of Supervisors holds a Regular Meeting during which the public is allowed to speak to the Board on items not on the agenda starting at or around 9:30am for the time being. (Please note that the BOS meetings do not start at a set time! More information appears closer to the meeting date and time, but be prepared to wait for it to begin.)
Agenda items in particular represent decisions made about our communities, and while we might not always agree on the best path forward, I am fond of saying that reasonable people will disagree and also that I get some of my best ideas from my constituency base. I am honored to serve on the Board as a County Supervisor and take the ideas, concerns, and feedback of the public very seriously.
Please, consider tuning into these meeting and encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same. We are stronger as a County when we are connected to one another, and engaged with the civic process.
