Supervisor's Message

d2 letterhead

Greetings,

In this edition of the District 2 Newsletter, I'd like to provide you with an update on District 2 items.

Niles Canyon Stroll & Roll

The Stroll & Roll on September 22, was a huge success. 12,000 folks attended the event. This immense show of support for our Initiative demonstrates that the public’s interest in a class-1 trail in Niles Canyon has not waned, and our office will continue to pursue this project.

Ordinance to Ban Sheep Riding

On November 19, our Board passed an ordinance, led by our office, to ban the activity of ‘mutton busting’ at rodeos in unincorporated Alameda County. Although this was a controversial topic, our office reviewed scientific studies, concerns of our constituents, testimonies from veterinarians, rodeo participants, and animal welfare groups, and concluded that mutton busting jeopardizes the health and safety of both animals and children participants. We appreciate everyone who voiced their opinion on the issue.

Legislative Update

In other recent legislative news, the Supreme Court heard arguments for Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California, which concerns the status of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). While a decision by the Court will likely not be made until June 2020, our office, the Board of Supervisors, and Alameda County stand resolute with Dreamers and their families in making this a welcoming county.

Dig Deep Farms

Our office has been working hard toward a number of initiative and our goal for getting Dig Deep Farms running in 2020 is proceeding on schedule. The water source needed to farm is being built and we would like to thank the Masons and the Deputy Sheriff’s Athletic League for their partnership and cooperation with our office on this initiative.

Mental Health Summit 2020

Another major initiative we are spearheading in 2020 is the Mental Health Summit at Washington Hospital. We are delighted to announce that Dr. William R. McFarlane, MD will be speaking at the summit. Dr. McFarlane is the Director of the Portland Identification and Early Referral (PIER) Program and the Early Detection and Intervention for the Prevention of Psychosis Program (EDIPPP). His research includes psychoeducation, psychosocial interventions for severe psychiatric disorders, and early detection and intervention of psychotic disorders in youth and young adults. We are honored by his presence. Save May 1-2, 2020 on your calendars for this important event and watch out for future newsletters for further details.

United Against Hate

Lastly, November 17 – 23, 2019 was United Against Hate week. At the Board meeting on November, 19, our office had the pleasure of honoring Connie Degrange and Fremont Mayor Lily Mei, who have tirelessly furthered this county’s goal in becoming a safe and inclusive home for peoples of every creed, background, and faith.

Wishing you a warm and safe holiday season.

Sincerely,

Richard Valle
