Alameda County CCC: Response to Citizenship Question, Strategic Plan, and Upcoming Webinar

3 Important Updates

1. Take Action: In June, the Supreme Court will determine whether the Trump Administration’s proposed citizenship question will be added to Census 2020. As you recall, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors formally opposed this question, as it is predicted to deter participation resulting in an undercount that would cost Alameda County billions of dollars in lost resources. On the day of the ruling, we invite our partners and their networks to join us for a press conference in support of our immigrant community.

  • When: We expect the decision to be made on a Monday in June (so please be prepared on June 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th).
  • Time: Please arrive at 11:30am. The press conference will start at 12:00pm.
  • Where: Lakeside steps of the Alameda County Courthouse -- 1225 Fallon Street, Oakland
  • Attire: We invite participants to wear clothing that represents their organization or their cultures and traditions. Our office will provide signs (see below).
  • Questions?: Please contact Casey at casey.farmer@acgov.org

2. Alameda County CCC Strategic Plan: Click here to read the Executive Summary. Here are few key highlights:

  • Census Ambassador Program: For all organizations and individuals who want to support Census outreach. Ambassadors will be equipped with thorough training, support with their outreach planning, materials, and t-shirts.
  • Materials: How-to guides, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), one-pagers, banners, and talking points will be printed for Census Ambassadors and available for the general public on our website. The materials will be developed within the Subcommittees so they are informed by stakeholders. They will also be translated and customizable.
  • Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QACs): At least 100 will be stationed throughout Alameda County in libraries, senior centers, County Department offices and trusted CBO sites. Grantees will also access the County’s technology resources to provide Questionnaire Assistance Kiosks, which can “pop up” in the community and/or at locations where computer labs are needed for Census workshops or community events.
  • Communications: The Census office created a Messenger Program to supply partners with critical Census information they need to share with their communities. It has also created a website that serves as a central hub for all information and resources related to Alameda County’s Census 2020 outreach efforts. Additionally, its Facebook page will promote and chronicle the outreach work of our office and our Census Ambassadors.

3. Census 101 Webinar: Have questions about Census 2020? Know a colleague who would like a briefing? Our office will be hosting a Census 101 Webinar on June 12 from 12pm-1pm. We will review why the Census is important to Alameda County, the potential barriers to participation among our hard-to-count population, what the CCC is doing to support outreach, and how you can get involved. This is also a great opportunity for organizations that have not yet attended a Subcommittee meeting to get up to speed! Please RSVP to Ben at benjamin.ulrey@acgov.org.
