Census Updates from Alameda County

AlCo-Census2

Dear partners,

We write to share a few important updates:

1. Citizenship Question: Beginning next week, the United States Supreme Court will review the citizenship question which the Trump Administration has proposed for Census 2020. By the end of June, the Supreme Court will determine whether or not this question will be included on the form. Among the many challenges of Census 2020 is the fear of participation among immigrant communities. This fear is justifiable and it’s one of the reasons the Alameda County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution last year to formally oppose the citizenship question. The Census Bureau’s own analysis found that 5.8% of households with a noncitizen would not respond to the Census if this question is added. In Alameda County, that level of an undercount would result in the loss of billions of dollars for our schools, hospitals, and roads. As a Complete Count Committee, we believe everyone counts and everyone belongs. To develop our collective response to the Supreme Court’s decision, we invite the Immigrant Subcommittee and other interested partners to join us for a planning meeting on Thursday, May 2 from 2-3:30pm at 1221 Oak Street, Room 255.
Please RSVP to Ben.Ulrey@acgov.org.

2. Funding Opportunity: To ensure a complete count, the Bay Area Census Funders Collaborative is now accepting proposals to support Census 2020 education and outreach efforts to hard-to-count communities in the Bay Area. Proposals will be accepted now through May 31, 2019 through this online portal. There will be an information session on Monday, April 29 from 10-11:30am at the East Bay Community Foundation in Oakland. Learn more & sign up for the information session here.
