Supervisor's Message

d2 letterhead

Happy New Year! 2019 brought new energy to our offices and I am honored to begin serving as President of the Board of Supervisors. As we hit the ground running in this new year and gain excitement for the great things in store, we also want to reflect back on the importance of governance for all.

In the 2016 November Election, voters in our county saw the growing issue with housing affordability and passed Measure A1 for $580 million in bond funding to support families here in Alameda County. You may be aware that over the last several years Alameda County has funded housing and developed policies for this new revenue source. Earlier this week, the Board approved an additional $39.8M to fund 424 affordable housing units in Berkeley, Fremont, and Oakland.

In addition to this action to help address the housing affordability crisis, our office is gearing up for some major events this year. District 1 Supervisor Scott Haggerty and the District 2 office are working to host a mental health summit for youth and families this spring at Washington Hospital in Fremont. Mental health is a topic that touches all our lives in various ways; we want to work towards de-stigmatizing this important issue and provide accessible resources for families to address and heal mental health concerns. Our office will keep you up to date on the developments of this ambitious event in the coming months.

District 2 will be working with District 1 to bring you the third biennial Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll. On this highly anticipated day, Highway 84 (Niles Canyon Road) will be closed to vehicular traffic, giving people an opportunity to bike and walk safely through the canyon with their friends and family. We started this event in 2015 in an effort to promote and initiate a class 1 trail through Niles Canyon. We look forward to bringing you this joyous event again on Sunday, September 22,2019. Please mark you calendar.

We hope you are as excited as we are for this upcoming year.
