Whether you barbecue or picnic, gather with family and friends, travel, use the day off to hike in the mountains, or just rest and relax, I hope your Independence Day is great. Please also take some time to remember the reason we celebrate: the founding of our country based on some revolutionary principles of freedom and democracy.
Our nation was formed in defiance of a sole tyrannical ruler. Our founders created the Constitution of The United States to ensure that our government and president was beholden to a set of built-in checks and balances – thus protecting citizens from oppressive authoritarian rule. What do you think? As we celebrate our 250 years of this democratic experiment, how are we doing?

One thing I ask you to consider NOT doing for this holiday is setting off loud fireworks in your neighborhood. I ask on behalf of the many dogs, veterans, sleeping babies and others who are triggered by the noise. The day after July 4 is the busiest time for our animal shelters as they are flooded with confused dogs who have run away because of their terror.

Dog owners please keep your dogs inside that evening. As an added measure, you can make sure they have ID on their collar or are microchipped. Some other options: leave the TV or radio up loud and sit with your dog. Thunder jackets are effective. In extreme cases, some vets will prescribe a doggie sedative (don’t use human drugs). Dogs struggle to make sense of all the nearby explosions, thinking they are a threat to our family, so if you have a dog please provide as much protection and assurance as you can.
Please be kind as you celebrate Fourth of July!

Find Food Access Resources In Tucson
Tucson food assistance providers are seeing a sharp rise in demand from families affected by delayed federal benefits, such as SNAP and WIC. At the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, there is an increase in first-time visitors, many of whom had never sought food assistance before. Volunteers are working overtime to assemble emergency food boxes for those suddenly without access to those benefits. The Community Food Bank offers help multiple times a week during varying hours continues to distribute food at its main location, 3003 S. Country Club Road, and through partner agencies across Southern Arizona. Officials urge residents in need to reach out early, as local inventories may fluctuate if the shutdown continues.
